Preservation Committee Meeting |
PRESENT: Yvonne Carignan, Elise Calvi, Doug McElrath (recording), Rebecca Nwude, Linda Sarigol
1. Mass Deacidification Update. Elise reported that the initial experiment has commenced with 170 P-class journalism-related volumes. In addition to the physical preparation of the books (which took only about 2 hours), various interested parties were informed including the journalism faculty, the Circulation and Periodicals staff. A general notice also went out to the library staff. The Staff Notes field in CARL will indicate that a volume has been deacidified and Preservation Technologies will mark the spine of each volume with a painted white dot. The Committee discussed the issue of spine clutter concerning the dot as well as the possibility of using MARC 583 field to record a variety of preservation treatments. It is possible that some of the deacidified books will be available for inspection at our next meeting on Feb. 27.
2. Shelving Guidelines. Yvonne distributed the draft guidelines that will be presented to the LEC. She noted that the guidelines have been written to apply to books in general with specific sections on compact shelving, oversize shelving, and book trucks. Committee members noted the need for guidelines for other media such as non-print, maps, etc.
3. Preservation Priorities. Linda offered the survey for Nonprint Media as a test case for the Committee to apply numerical ratings. The Committee also rated the survey for EPSL prepared by Rebecca. In addition to rating use, condition, value, and donor issues, the Committee agreed that there needed to be a rating for access. Yvonne will copy and distribute the other surveys for Committee members to review before our next meeting.
