Preservation Committee Meeting

PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
June 19, 1998

Draft Minutes

PRESENT: Nwude, Hellman, Pedersoli, McElrath, and Carignan. Hellman agreed to record minutes.

The Preservation Committee meeting began at 10:00 a.m. in the Collection Management office.

The next meeting date was set for Friday, August 14th, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. in the Preservation Department Office.

Carignan led a discussion of future representation on the Preservation Committee. The decision of the committee was to continue with the representation configuration now is use, i.e., 1 representative each from a branch library, reference, CCC, Collection Management, and Special Collections, and 3 representatives from TSD. When the library reorganization is completed, the committee will revisit this issue.

Carignan led a discussion concerning the proposed joint meeting of the Preservation Committee and the Cataloging Priorities Committee on July 20, 1998, at 10:00 a.m. in the larger TSD meeting room. The intent of the meeting is to see how the priorities of the two committees compare, with an eye to using any overlapping priorities to strengthen grant proposals. Carignan will forward a copy of the cataloging priorities list to members of the Preservation Committee before the joint meeting.

The committee ranked preservation priorities submitted by NTL and PALib, with the following results:

Collection Use Cond. Value Donor TOTAL
NTL GeneralCollection 3 2 3 3 11
NTL Postcards 1 1 1 3 6
NTL Photos 3 2 1 3 9

The committee has questions about the importance of the postcard collection and would like more information about its significance. The committee would also like to know whether the photos in the NTL collection are unique or copies of images held elsewhere. Carignan will investigate these issues and report to the committee.
Collection Use Cond. Value Donor TOTAL
Hamburg/Munz Scrapbooks 1 3 3 2 9
Anderson Scrapbooks 1 2 2 3 8

There was discussion about the appropriateness of considering single-item treatment for a 19th Century tunebook as a preservation priority as opposed to something that should come out of an ad hoc conservation treatment fund. (what was the decision? Help me, someone.) The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m. ---------------------- Ethel Hellman
