Preservation Committee Meeting |
PRESENT: Yvonne Carignan, Heleni Pedersoli, Doug McElrath, Rebecca Nwude, Linda Sarigol, Ethel Hellman.
1. Viewed video on ZFB conservation center.
2. Preservation staff reported new monies ($60,000) becoming available to enlarge the project over what is already planned ($50,000) for this fiscal year.
3. Brain storming for new areas of the collection to select for deacidification: The Preservation Committee recommends that we focus on American, English, and foreign literatures in the "p" classifications next. Among our selection criteria are the following:
4. Review of preservation projects for fy99: The Preservation Committee approved the proposed list of projects for this fiscal year. The projects come from the Preservation Committee's list of priorities. Ethel Hellman will refine the details of projects to be performed in-house.
5. Oversized trucks proposed for supporting the shelving guidelines: Yvonne needs to know how many trucks are needed for all branches and departments of UM Libraries in order to find a vendor to make them. We surmise that we need about 11 trucks: One for each branch library, one for Gov Docs, four for Hornbake when Special Collections moves in, and one for McKeldin Circ. We may need to go in with UMS and/or with CIRLA to bring the number up high enough to get a vendor and a better price. We also should find out if the campus shop can make them.
6. Drop-edge photocopiers: Doug McElrath asked that we recommend drop-edge copiers as replacements for all library copiers. The Preservation Committee would like Yvonne to take this recommendation forward to the Library Administration.
7. Orientation packet: Information on preservation should be included in the Libraries' orientation packet for students. Preservation should come up with a punch-out book mark in an 8 ½ by 11 page with a summary of care and handling practices.
At this point the meeting was adjourned.
