Time of meeting: 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Attending: Yvonne Carignan (Chair), Beth Alvarez, Anita Carrico (recorder), Gloria Chawla (facilitator), Karla Hahn (time-keeper), Mary Scott
- Update on Conservator, Brittle Materials, Bindery Searches.
Conservator: Search committee has met. Closing date is December 15, 1999.
Brittle Materials: Candidate chosen. Waiting for approvals.
Bindery Unit Head: Search not yet opened. The unit currently being run by an LT I, who is doing a very good job and avoiding backlogs.
- Deacidification Status Report.
Handout "Status Report on Deacidification Project".
Total mass deacidification accomplished as of the end of the first quarter of FY00: 158 stacks at an expenditure of $162,000. Yvonne proposed using funds from several Preservation budget lines and a possible grant from the Friends to add $38,000 to this year's deacidification project. This would enable 35 additional stacks to be deacidified in FY00. Suggestions were made for seeking additional funding for the project. At Lynne Woodruff's request, Preservation staff investigated the suitability of the Art Library's "Ns" for deacidification and found them to be good candidates. However, even if we get funding of $100,000 per year for mass deacidification, if will take two more years to complete the current project of deacidifying the English and American Literature sections in the "Ps."
- Preservation Priorities.
Handout "Preservation Projects by Budget FY2000". Last year nearly all items on priority list were addressed. This year the Preservation Department is severely short-staffed, thus it may be difficult to stay on schedule. Beth pointed out several first priority items, all being the permanent records of the University, ie; schedule of classes, course catalogs, faculty newsletter, etc.
- Announcements.
Charles Kramer, University pest manager, will be speaking to Preservation Department staff on December 2, 1999. Those interested are welcome to attend.
Terms of service for committee members: Yvonne was charged with sending an email to committee members to determine who wished to stay on or go off the committee so that terms could be staggered. Please note: Yvonne finds that description of terms for committee members was omitted from the approved charge which can be found on the
Preservation Committee Web Page.
Yvonne needs to investigate the intended term structure before proceeding.
