Preservation Committee Meeting Minutes
July 12, 20011:30-3:00 p.m.TSD Council Room Present: Yvonne Carignan, Zaida Diaz, Karla Hahn, Anne Turkos, Patty Longenbach, Alan Mattlage, Christine McCarthy, Mary Scott, & Gloria Chawla (recording) The Preservation Committee welcomed Patty Longenbach, who will represent Government Documents. The committee discussed a few of the changes in preservation processes recommended by the TSD Blue Ribbon Committee. Emily Bell has been hired as a full time LTII, to work with high-level, complex repairs and in-house binding. Yvonne reviewed the progress on FY01 conservation priorities. Besides accomplishing many listed priorities this year, the Preservation Department also dealt with a number of unforeseen priorities such as preparing and packing 500 Prange items for exhibit in Japan, and post-disaster salvage. The deacidification goal was met, deacidifying close to 8,000 items this year. CMT and the subject teams are considering a new target for deacidification, but Preservation staff anticipate needing one more year to complete deacidification of the English and American Literature sections (PR's and PS's). Preservation spent all of it's budget for FY01. The Preservation Department annual report will elaborate on the specific accomplishments. The committee began to rank new projects for the coming year. Patti pointed out a few additional preservation priorities from Government Documents: Many maps need to be encapsulated. Laws need to be bound or rebound. The paper copy of the Congressional Globe needs to be recased or rebound. Patti and Yvonne will get together to fill out the Preservation Committee's criteria forms for these projects. The committee discussed a potential cold-storage space on Hornbake 4th floor, as well as an AV-preservation lab. We decided to consider these items for the Preservation Plan, as well as for the priorities list. Performing Arts Library needs 2 huge works of art to be framed for the Grand Opening on September 22. 2001. The priority list will be completed at a later meeting. We will review items which have been on the list for a long time and consider whether their priority rating is still appropriate. Next meeting: September 20, 2001, from 1:30 - 3:00 in the TSD Conference Room.
