Preservation Committee Meeting Minutes

Horizontal Rule

September 25, 2001

Present: Alvarez, Carignan, K. Hahn, Koutsky, Mattlage, McCarthy, Scott (recording)

  1. Yvonne reviewed the preservation priorities for FY 02 and distributed updated lists.
    • Archives: microfilming of the schedules of classes has been completed
    • Art Library
      • Items in Levitine Collection were conserved (rebound, enclosures made, etc.).
      • Special Collections now in Rare Books and part of Rare Books priorities.
    • Broadcasting Archives: 10 (ten) scrapbooks have been microfilmed; 90 more scrapbooks await microfilming
    • Engineering Library:
      • Cleaning and stabilizing items going to MOSS.
      • Made enclosures and phase boxes for 19th Century books.
      • Von Mises and Born Collections are moving to storage
    • McKeldin: Baltimore Business Journal was microfilmed.
    • Performing Arts Library
      • The Lowell Mason books are in the process of being boxed as part of this year's activities (not yet completed). We have contracted for boxes for about half of the group and will be fabricating enclosures in-house for the rest over the course of the year.
      • Tune Book Collection was boxed.
    • Literary Manuscripts: K.A. Porter sofa was restored.

The Performing Arts Library circulating scores (in-house project) was removed from the preservation priorities list and will be worked on as part of the Conservation Unit's regular workflow.

Yvonne will talk with CMT about the next target group for mass deacidification.

More detailed information about preservation priorities and projects can be found on the Preservation Committee's Web page.

  2. A discussion of "medium rare collections" occurred. We agreed that controlled access and relatively good environment make MOSS, or similar off-site shelving, appropriate for protecting materials considered "medium rare". We acknowledged that, by now, there is no space left to add to the collections waiting to go into MOSS. The Preservation Committee will be interested in initiating further discussion about medium rare materials with interested parties.
  3. Ranking new materials:
    • University Archives & Historical Manuscripts has at least 1 million images (photographs, negatives, slides, etc). After a discussion, this project was scored 11.
    • Government Documents - Maryland maps. For now this project was placed on the in-house list until Christine can evaluate the condition of the maps.

  4. The idea of a book symposium related to issues raised by Nicholson Baker was discussed. Details will be discussed at the next meeting.
  5. The next meeting will be November 13th, 1:00-2:30.
