Preservation Mission, Values, and Vision Statements
MISSION:
Preserve UM Libraries' collections using current professional standards and at the highest cost/benefit ratio; contribute to the UM Libraries' mission and make collections available to users; foster training for staff and users in proper handling of library materials; and
serve as preservation resources and consultants for the Campus and the broader community as well as for UM Libraries.
VALUES: Effectiveness is a value that is central to the work we do in the Preservation Production Group. Due to the realities of limited resources and the ever-growing and changing preservation needs of the substantial and varied collections in our care, we must develop effective procedures and practices that return as many materials as possible to the users in a timely fashion. In order to be effective, it is necessary to work in an efficient manner, while adhering to principles of ethical practice and striving for excellence. We can better achieve this effectiveness by collaborating with others who have different areas of expertise, and by using creative thinking to solve complex, and often difficult, problems that may arise. It is also important to maintain a sense of responsibility for making sound decisions that take into account the high standards that we set for ourselves. By being effective, we reinforce our self-respect and earn the respect of others in the libraries and in the broader community. Putting all these values together to work effectively, we can count on high-quality, precise work that serves our community by maintaining access to library materials and preserving them for future users.

VISION: The Preservation Production Group will be an innovative leader in preserving all types of materials within all collections at the University of Maryland. We will partner with other library initiatives and the larger academic community to provide quality products to our customers in a timely manner through effective planning, prioritization, and education.
