Condition Criteria for Weeding

One objective of a weeding project should be to retain the best condition copies if multiple copies are to be weeded. The criteria below provide guidance to staff selecting best condition copies for retention in the collection and worst condition copies for weeding.

Intact Text Block Missing Pages
Wide Gutter Margins Narrow Gutter Margins
No Tape Cloth or Transparent Tape on Textblock
Clean Pages Highlighting, Writing, Underlining, etc.
White dot on Spine; Bookkeeper Deacidification Sticker Inside Covers Not Deacidified

1. Sewn Through Fold-keep instead of 2. Adhesive Fan Binding
2. Adhesive Fan Binding-keep instead of 3. Oversewn Binding
