Cataloging First Time In

Report of Findings as of October 30, 2000 - Part 7 Horizontal Rule
7. Results of cataloging survey: 28 out of 35 surveys completed.

A survey of 35 titles picked at random was conducted. 10 titles in the Rapid Cataloging Unit's routine queue, 5 titles in its Rush, Ref, and Reserves queue, 10 titles in the Monograph Unit's routine queue, 5 titles in its Rush, Ref, and Reserves queue, 5 titles in the electronic monographs queue.

  • Cataloging copy could be used as is: 6 (1 Rush, 1 re-searched after time in the Mono Queue)
  • Monograph add: 3
  • Required minor edit: 1 (publication and copyright dates)
  • Required major edit: 2 (needed call numbers)
  • Required series check: 3
  • Electronic resource: 3 (each record needed lots of editing)
  • PromptCat requiring major edit: 3
  • Title needed recataloging to a serial: 1
  • Juvenile: 1 (Rush, the new Harry Potter book)
  • Serial analytic: 1
  • UKM records to Monographs Unit: 3
  • Original records Needed: 1

Summary of results: Most print materials were processed in a timely manner. The Rush titles in the survey were cataloged on the day on receipt. PromptCat titles needing major editing were finished within one week. There is a three months work load of materials in Rapid Cataloging's routine queue. Materials received in June are being searched on OCLC for the first time in September and updated on OCLC if good cataloging copy is found. Survey titles received in May and needing a series check were updated on OCLC in September. This is in keeping with the normal one month work load of materials waiting for a series check in the Authorities Unit. Several of the titles in the survey for which good copy was found had been sitting in the Monograph Unit's routine queue for almost a year. This queue is currently being researched on OCLC for copy. One UKM record of the three actually needed no work but was sent to the Monographs Unit anyway according to cataloging guidelines to send all UKM records to the professional catalogers to review.

Almost all of the cataloging records needed some work. This is not surprising since the arrival of PromptCat has removed the "easy" titles from the Cataloging Dept. Only one original record was needed for a title which had been in the Monograph Unit's routine queue for almost a year. The cataloging of electronic resources is taking up to six months from the initial request for cataloging and reflects that only a few monograph catalogers are comfortable in cataloging them.
