NISO Z39.71, sect. 5.5.4.2, sets the standard for captions. Briefly: use the term from the piece in the vernacular; abbreviate using AACR2 Appendix B, ISO 832 or other standard lists. (e.g. International acronyms, initialisms & abbreviations dictionary). Abbreviations are generally given in the singular, and if two abbreviations are possible, use the shortest. If the parts of a unit have no captions, do not supply captions. If no abbreviation is available, record the caption in its full form. Check the CONSER Abbreviations for Captions list for additional captions not listed here.
