Call Numbers for Juvenile Collection Materials

Materials in the McKeldin Juvenile collections before July 2006 were not classified using the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. Nonfiction materials in Juvenile were classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) schedule, except for biographies, which were assigned the call number ""Bio" and a Cutter number for the subject of the biography. Fiction materials were assigned the call numbers "Easy" or "Fic" and a Cutter number for the main entry. For legible display and consistent sorting in the online catalog, these call numbers should be formatted as described below.

Beginning July 1, 2006, the use of the locally created classification of "Bio", "easy",and "FIC" is discontinued for all juvenile works in the University of Maryland Libraries. The UM Libraries will now use the two nationally standard classification systems, Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal Classification.

Current Practice

Juvenile fiction uses a current Library of Congress classification. All other juvenile works, with the exception of Shady Grove's JUV collection, use Dewey. The Shady Grove juvenile collection uses only Library of Congress call numbers.

Historic Practice

Prior to July 1, 2006, the elements of Juvenile Collection call numbers are as follows:

1st element
  • Dewey class no. -or
  • Bio -or (obsolete as of July 2006)
  • Easy -or (obsolete as of July 2006)
  • Fic -or (obsolete as of July 2006)
2nd element
  • Cutter number, including work letters for title

Cutter for the Author or Title, whichever is main entry. Following author cutter give work letter for first word of title disregarding initial article. For authors with several titles beginning with the same letter, use double work letters. If the item is title main entry, cutter for the first significant word of title; do not add any workletter following the cutter.

Author's cutter:

  1. Entry starts with consonants, except "S"-- use 1 letter.
  2. Entry starts with vowels and "S"-- use 2 letters.
  3. Entry starts with "Sc"-- use 3 letters, e.g.
    • Carroll, Lewis, 1832-1898. -- C236
    • Aiken, Joan, 1924- -- Ai42
    • Sarton, May, 1912- -- Sa71
    • Schwartz, Alvin, 1927- -- Sch949
3rd element Date -if necessary

A space is used to separate each element from the following element.

Cutter number format: The first letter of the Cutter should be capitalized; any following letters should be lower case. Any work letters following the Cutter number should be lower case-e.g. Sch949tr. No decimal point is used in front of the Cutter.

Examples:

  • 398 Ay44an 1981
  • 428.1 W395a
  • Bio D747p 1965 (obsolete as of July 2006, use only for call number editing)
  • Easy M452fg (obsolete as of July 2006, use only for call number editing)
  • Fic Sp99lh 1950 (obsolete as of July 2006, use only for call number editing)

Entering Juvenile call numbers in holdings records:

UMCP uses the 852 tag with first indicator 1 field for Juvenile call numbers. The call number is entered in the ‡h and ‡i subfields of the 852. Call numbers are formatted as follows:

852 1 $$b CPMCK $$c JUV $$h 523.1 $$i Ap28n 1992

852 1 $$b CPMCK $$c JUV $$h Fic $$i Sp991h
