Accompanying Materials Policy and Cataloging ExamplesAccompanying Materials PolicyDefinition of accompanying material: material issued with, and intended to be used with, the item being catalogued (AACR2)
Accompanying materials at College Park are handled as follows:
Item record: A separate item record is created for each accompanying material piece. The item record, in addition to the call number of the parent item, includes a descriptive term in the Description box. The material type matches the accompanying material. The Material Type term and the descriptive term used as part of the call number may sometimes be the same but in most cases are not. Labels: The call number and descriptive term are included on the label for the accompanying material. Housing: Accompanying nonprint material is housed in a pamphlet binder unless otherwise directed by the owning sublibrary. Accompanying print material is pambound when warranted, according to procedures established by the Preservation Production Group. Preservation will provide to cataloging staff a supply of housings for the media formats processed most often (e.g., computer diskettes, CD-ROMS, etc.). [The housing procedures are interim since this is still under discussion] For specific processing procedures, see the following: Processing of "mixed media" materials (Acquisitions procedures needing updating) Media descriptors to be used in item records for accompanying material Material type codes used at UM Libraries Current practices for storing non-print accompaniments Barcoding instructions See also: Owning and Temporary Locations Assignment in the Catalog Mixed Media Cataloging ExamplesAudio cassette as accompanying materialCompact disc as accompanying material Computer optical disc (CD-ROM) as accompanying material DVD as accompanying material DVD-ROM as accompanying material Magnetic disk as accompanying material (3 ½ in. and 5 ¼ in. floppies) Phonograph record as accompanying material
If you identify accompanying materials which require an example, please contact the Cataloging Policy Coordinating Team at tsd-cpct@umd.edu and give us the piece or a surrogate. |
