Preservation Considerations Decision Tree
Process "As Is"
Send directly to End Processing without further preservation consideration:
- All items which are structurally sound AND
- All Paperbacks with the following characteristics:
- Thicker than 1/4 inch AND
- Have more than 70 pages AND
- Are greater than 18 cm. in height AND
- Less than 28 cm. in height or width AND
- Which do not fall under the categories listed below for preservation consideration OR
- Items cataloged for permanent or temporary locations such as reference, reserves, ETICa, and ETICd -- OR WITH SPECIAL HANDLING FLYERS -- go directly to the location (via End Processing) and are NOT bound OR
- RUSH items go directly to the requester (via End Processing) and are NOT bound, with the exception of necessary in-house repairs which are also rushed.
- MOSS items go directly to Database Management (via End Processing) and are NOT bound; a shelf in RUSH in End Processing is reserved for MOSS items.

Preservation Considerations
Place on End Processing Unit special shelving/trucks:
- All hardbacks and paperbacks which are NOT structurally sound. This includes:
- Detached covers
- Unattached errata
- Loose pages
- Damaged spines
- Loose leaf binders (except those intended for updating)
- Spiral bound materials
- All items requiring pockets for maps, charts, or other supplemental material
- All items with unusual bindings that may become damaged during shelving or use, such as art books with exposed sewing on the spine or unusual cover configurations (such as holes or cutouts, or extraneous materials like clasps)
- General fragility
- Any other physical problem
- Paperbacks with the following characteristics (Note exceptions that follow the bullet list below):
- Less than 1/4 inch thick
- Fewer than 70 pages
- Folio & over-sized items (28 cm. or greater in height or width)
- Less than 18cm in height
- Exceptions
- Series with larges numbers of items as agreed by receiving unit
- Sturdy paperbacks that have the following characteristics may be processed "as is" even when they are larger than 28 cm:
- Heavy, well attached covers
- Sturdy text blocks with good leaf attachment
- No physical weakness of any kind
- Note: Please ask in Preservation if you are not sure!
