HOW DO I ... TURN ON LCD PROJECTOR?

  • Important note:
    To avoid delays, it is suggested that you turn OFF the ceiling lights BEFORE attempting to turn on the LCD projector. Why? Sometimes the ceiling lights interfere with the laser from the remote control which in turn prevents the LCD projector from turning ON.
  • Use the NEC remote control, found near the instructor's computer, to turn the LCD projector ON. Point it directly at the LCD projector and press the ON button down for about 5-6 seconds.
  • The projector needs a minute-or-two to warm up before it can project.
  • Touch the CLEAR button. Then touch the INSTRUCTOR to PROJECTOR button until it turns from grey to red.

To turn OFF the LCD Projector:

  • Close all open applications (e.g. Netscape)
  • Important note:
    If there isn't a group coming in after your session, turn off the LCD projector! It is suggested that you turn OFF the ceiling lights BEFORE attempting to turn OFF the LCD projector. Why? Sometimes the ceiling lights interfere with the laser from the remote control which in turn prevents the LCD projector from turning OFF.
  • Point the NEC remote control directly at the LCD projector and press the OFF button for 5-6 seconds. There will be a delay; it will take a few seconds for the projector to shut OFF as it will take a few minutes for the projector's bulb to completely cool down. You might hear the LCD's internal fan working to cool the unit.

HOW DO I ... PRINT and PAY-FOR-PRINT?

Depending on how you logged on the computers, there are two ways of printing from these computers:

PRINT:

  • COMPUTERS LOGGED ON TO MCK 2109 DESKTOP:
    When computers are logged onto the mck2109 desktop, users should click on File>Print... or click on the printer icon located on the software application's upper toolbar;
  • An HP Laserjet 1320n Series printer is networked to all the computers; it is located in the rear of the room;
  • Due to the lack of funds to replace printers and provide free paper, printing is limited to 5-pages per person. At all times, users should consider e-mailing documents.

HELP! The printer is ON but it's not printing from any computer:

  • Sometimes, when there has been little activity in the lab the printer falls idle;
  • Locate the Jet Direct Box; it sits on the floor underneath the printer;
  • Pull out the power cord from the back of the Jet Direct Box (this cord is indicted by the blue tag). Then, plug it back in;
  • Try printing again;
  • Still not printing? Unplug all the cords that are plugged into the back of the Jet Direct Box, then plug them back in again;
  • Still not printing? The server might be down. Contact the ITD Help Desk for assistance.

PAY-FOR-PRINT:

  • COMPUTERS LOGGED ON TO TRAINING 2109 DESKTOP:
    When computers are logged onto the public desktop, Pay-For-Print is the system users will need to interact with in order to send their jobs to the printer;
  • Using a UM I.D. card (with Terrapin Express on it) or a Photocopy (Visitor's) Card, users will need to go to either of the print stations on 1st floor, McKeldin Library, to retrieve jobs;
  • For detailed instructions on how to use this system, refer to How the Pay-for-Print System Works.

HOW DO I ... GET HELP NOW?

Don't panic! Follow these steps:

  • Get a pencil and a Problem Report form (found on a clipboard in a clear-plastic holder on the wall near the instructor's computer).
  • Pick up the phone and call the ITD Help Desk: 5-9188 (or 301-405-9188).
  • Important: The help desk is available between the hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. If you are using the labs at any other time, you will need to improvise. If you find that you are unable to resolve the situation, please be courteous to future users of that lab:
    • Email ITD with the details of your problem at helpdesk@itd.umd.edu
    • Drop a completed problem report under the door of User Education Services (room 2113, 2nd floor)
    We can't resolve problems we are unaware of!

  • Give ITD your name and the instruction room number (MCK 2109). Indicate the urgency of the situation AND help them understand the problem. In most cases, ITD staff will respond immediately to problems in the instruction labs.
  • As you describe the problem to ITD, fill out the Problem Report form.
  • Ask ITD for a work order number and write it on the form.
  • Improvise for a few minutes while you wait for assistance.
  • Important: After your session, bring the completed Problem Report form to User Education Services, 2nd floor, room 2113, so that follow-up action can be taken. We cannot remedy problems we are unaware of. After 5:00p.m. slip this Form under the door.

HOW DO I ... SET UP ROOM FOR THE NEXT USER

Be considerate of others using the instruction lab after you by following these steps:

  • Important: Please insure that the equipment is in good working order when you leave. DO NOT leave technical problems unrported for others to manage. Report all problems to the ITD Help Desk at 5-9188 (or 301-405-9188) and deliver Problem Report form to User Education Services, 2113 McKeldin Library after your session.
  • Turn OFF the LCD (ceiling) Projector. Bulbs are very expensive and difficult to replace.
  • Close all computer applications (e.g. Netscape, Powerpoint, etc.).
  • Leave all computers ON (both CPU and monitor).
  • Discard trash. Recycle stray handouts. Straighten chairs. Erase the whiteboard.
  • If used, turn OFF the VCR. Remember to take all videocassettes and floppy disks with you.
  • If used, turn OFF the overhead projector. Call User Education Services at 301-405-9254 or 301-405-9070 to have it removed from the lab.
  • Turn OFF all room lights.
  • Make sure the instruction room door is locked behind you. Do not leave guest lecturers, students or others unattended in the lab.
