This room is for library staff use only. An exception is made in September and October when priority access is given to User Education Services for information literacy classes. During this time, this room generally cannot be reserved for non-instruction activities. Inquiries concerning this room should be directed to Staff Learning and Development.

SIZE, LAYOUT, DESCRIPTION
Size of Room: 857 sq. ft.
Capacity:
There is 1 instructor's computer. 7121 can safely accommodate no more than 40 people at one time, as determined by the Fire Marshall's Office.
Description:
Located on the 7th floor of McKeldin Library, 7121 is arranged with an instructor's computer at the front of the room. The
remainder of the space is taken up by approximately 35 chairs and 4 tables; they can be arranged in a variety of configurations. There is a lectern at the head of the room. There are additional tables for handouts positioned at the rear of the room. There is a ceiling mounted LCD projector (operated by remote control), and a wall screen. A moveable flipchart is positioned at the front of the room. Additional chairs are made available. There is no wireless microphone, VCR, or printer available in this room.

HOW DO I ... TURN ON THE LIGHTS?
- Located on the left as you enter the instruction room are the light switches. Flip the switches UP to turn ON the room lights;
- There is an additional set of light switches which contain dimmers located on the wall next to the closet door at the front of the room. Slide the switches UP or DOWN to brighten or dim the lights.

HOW DO I ... LOG ON THE COMPUTER?
Important notes:
-
The CPU and monitor can remain safely ON 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Do not turn it OFF.
If the Computer is ON:
- Typically, the computer monitor will go-dark or display a screen saver when idle. Move the mouse or press the SHIFT key to restore the screen.
- Depending on the situation, you might have to do this:
Simultaneously press Ctrl-Alt-Del and:
- User name: type in mck7121
- Password: there is no password
- Log on to: choose Library
- Click on: OK
If the Computer is OFF, you will need to log it ON:
- CPU: Turn ON the computer by pressing the round-black-button, located in the center of the CPU tower.
- Monitor: Turn ON the monitor by pressing the round-black-button on the extreme right end of the monitor.
- Wait a few minutes for the computer to boot up the Windows operating system.
- Simultaneously press Ctrl-Alt-Del and:
- User name: type in mck7121
- Password: there is no password
- Log on to: choose Library
- Click on: OK

HOW DO I ... TURN ON LCD PROJECTOR?
Important note:
To avoid delays, it is suggested that you turn OFF the ceiling lights BEFORE attempting to turn ON the LCD projector. Why? Sometimes the ceiling lights interfere with the laser from the remote control which in turn prevents the LCD projector from turning ON.
- Switch on the SONY remote control by pushing its switch (located under "command") from OFF to ON.
- Use the SONY remote control to turn the LCD projector ON. Point it directly at the LCD projector and press the bright green ON button down for about 5-6 seconds.
- The projector needs a minute-or-two to warm up before it can project.
To turn OFF the LCD Projector:
- Close all open applications (e.g. Netscape)
- Important note:
It is suggested that you turn OFF the ceiling lights BEFORE attempting to turn OFF the LCD projector. Why? Sometimes the ceiling lights interfere with the laser from the remote control which in turn prevents the LCD projector from turning ON.
- Point the SONY remote control directly at the LCD projector and press the bright green OFF button for 5-6 seconds. It will take a few seconds for the projector to shut off as it will take a few minutes for the bulb to completely cool down. You might hear the LCD's internal fan working to cool the unit.
- Switch OFF the remote control by pushing its switch from ON to OFF.

HOW DO I ... USE AN OVERHEAD PROJECTOR?
If the overhead projector has been inadvertantly removed from this room, contact Staff Learning and Development to request that one be made available.
When available:
- Position the overhead projector in front on the wall screen, and plug the cord into an outlet.
- Turn ON the overhead projector by pressing the mustard colored bar located on the front surface of the projector. It has a label on it which reads "press on".
To turn OFF the overhead projector:
- Press the mustard colored bar again to turn it off.
- Unplug the overhead projector from the outlet.
- Contact Staff Learning and Development to have the overhead projector removed from the lab.

HOW DO I ... WATCH A VIDEO OR DVD?
To turn ON the VCR/DVD player:
- Switch on the SONY remote control by pushing the COMMAND switch from OFF to ON.
- Point the remote control at the projector and press the green power button for 5-6 seconds.
Important note: Turn OFF the ceiling lights before attempting to turn on the LCD projector. Sometimes the ceiling lights interfere with the laser from the remote control which in turn prevents the LCD projector from turning on.
- Continue to use the remote control. Change the source to VIDEO Auto by pressing the INPUT button. Point the remote control at the LCD projector and look at the upper left corner of the wall screen. This will indicate which input is projecting.
- The GO VIDEO VCR/DVD player sits under the monitor on the table in front of the instructor's keyboard. Turn the player on by pressing the round POWER button (with a green dot in the center) located in the lower left hand corner of the player.
- INSERT your videocassette or DVD into the slot. The machine should automatically sense the media being used and switch into the proper "mode". If it doesn't, press the small VCR/DVD button to switch the player into the mode that will recognize your media.
- The video/DVD will begin playing. If it does not, press the PLAY button which is the top button of the four control buttons.
- To adjust the volume: The small speakers located on the lower shelf under the monitor control the sound. Turn the volume control knob on the front of the speaker to adjust the volume. li>
To turn OFF the VCR/DVD player:
- Remove the video/DVD by pressing the appropriate Eject button on the player.
- Press the POWER button to turn it OFF.
- Important: Using the LCD remote control, press the INPUT button to change the projection signal from the Video Auto to INPUT A which displays the computer monitor.
- Turn the LCD projector OFF by pressing the power button for 5-6 seconds.
- Remember to take your video or DVD with you!

Conducting a staff seminar or training? If yes...
Don't panic! Follow these steps:
- Get a pencil and a Problem Report form (found on a clipboard in a clear-plastic holder on the wall near the instructor's computer).
- Pick up the phone and call the ITD Help Desk at 5-9188 (or 301-405-9188).
Important: The help desk is available between the hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. If you are using the labs at any other time, you will need to improvise. If you find that you are unable to resolve the situation, please be courteous to future users of that lab: - Email ITD with the details of your problem at helpdesk@itd.umd.edu
- Drop a completed problem report under the door of PASD (7th floor, room 7109)
We can't resolve problems we are unaware of! |
- Give ITD your name and the instruction room number (MCK 7121). Indicate the urgency of the situation AND help them understand the problem. In most cases, ITD staff will respond immediately to problems in the instruction labs.
- As you describe the problem to ITD, fill out the Problem Report form.
- Ask ITD for a work order number. Write it on the form.
- Improvise for a few minutes while you wait for assistance.
- Important: After your session, bring the completed Problem Report form to the PASD office, 7th floor, room 7109, so that follow-up action can be taken. We cannot remedy problems we are unaware of. After 5:00p.m. slip the Form under the door.

HOW DO I ... SET UP FOR THE NEXT USER?
Be considerate of others using the instruction lab next by following these steps:
- Important: Please insure that the equipment is in good working order when you leave. DO NOT leave unreported technical problems for others to manage. Report all problems to the ITD Help Desk at 5-9188 (at 301-405-9188) and notify Staff Learning and Development.
- Turn OFF the LCD (ceiling) Projector. Bulbs are very expensive and difficult to replace.
- Close all computer applications (e.g. Netscape, Powerpoint, etc.).
- Leave the computer ON (both CPU and monitor).
- Discard trash. Recycle stray handouts. Straighten chairs. Erase the whiteboard.
- If used, turn OFF the overhead projector.
- Turn OFF the room lights.
- Make sure the instruction room door is locked behind you. Do not leave guest lecturers, students or others unattended in the lab.
