Horizontal Rule

In attendance:
Hahn, Cunningham, Fishman, Garber, Kackley, Herron, Jackson

Absent:
Greenwell (excused)

Guest:
Gina Calia

1. Visitor's Web Page (handout)

Mary Lou Cumberpatch is continuing to construct a Web page that will provide outside groups with the information they will need to know when requesting library instruction and visit to UM Libraries. The Committee reviewed and discussed the content of this page (under construction). It was suggested to add information for visiting scholars.

*Homework for next meeting: Review and bring comments of the Visitor's Web page: www.lib.umd.edu/UES/visitors.html (URL used to be …/UES/high-school.html)

2. Fall 1999 Survey of ENGL 101 T.A.s (handout)

Sixty T.A.s taught ENGL 101 during the fall'99 semester and so far (as of 12-16-99) 34 T.A.s have responded to the UES survey. A brief summary and highlights from the survey were presented (compiled by Gina Calia); the Committee discussed these results. It was decided that T.A.s needed more advanced preparation and/or knowledge about what was covered during the library orientation session. The ENGL 101 Special Lecturers are encouraged to attend the Libraries' peer training sessions.

3. Virtual Tour (handout)

The Committee discussed the latest (and almost complete) version of the Libraries' Virtual Tour Web page. This page will become "live" in January or early February '00 and linked to the Libraries' home page. The group discussed the possibility of constructing a virtual tour of Hornbake Library, using some of the renderings that illustrate the new renovations being planed and made; Karen Fishman will talk to Special Collections about this idea. This idea could perhaps be used as a "template' for future virtual tours of UM branch libraries and special collections.

*Homework for next meeting: Review and bring comments about the Virtual Tour page (once the URL is made available).

4. Faculty and Graduate Student Seminars (handout)

Cunningham and Hahn discussed the Winterterm and spring 2000 line up of "Faculty and Graduate Student Electronic Resources Seminars." These seminars have never been offered during Winter Term; this is an experiment to see how un/popular scheduling them during this time period will be.

Postscript: The attendance figures for the seminars held in January were excellent - and proved that Winterterm is a good time to hold faculty/graduate student seminars.

5. Basics and Beyond Classes

The Committee discussed possible scenarios for these classes during the spring '00 semester. The group decided that they should be called "Beyond the Basics," with the focus on advanced database searching. Further discussion is pending the outcome of meetings that Trudi is having with the subject teams and Lori and Desi, as well as the Acting Director of the Professional Writing Program, Bob Coogan.

6. ACOTAW (handout)

Gina Calia was invited to talk about the ACOTAW (A Comparison of Tutorials Around the World) Web page. She discussed with the group the tutorials that she liked and disliked.

Homework for next meeting: Look at TILT. Look at the links to the ACOTAW* Web page and compile a list of best ideas and/or practices (for Web tutorials), compile a list of ideas of content, to address the library instruction needs of freshmen and sophomores and/or first time users. What should be included in UM Libraries' module?

*note: The Acotaw were native American tribes that inhabited the forests and fields of what is now the greater College Park region - NOT!

7. Meeting dates for the spring

Because of some conflicts, the meeting schedule has been revised. All meetings will take place from 10:30 - 12 on the fourth Wednesday of the month (except for March - because of spring break, we will meet the fifth Wednesday). All meetings are in McKeldin 1109. Here are the NEW and IMPROVED dates:

    February 23
    March 29
    April 26
    May 24
