1. Members were introduced and a name for the group established: Committee on Library User Education (CLUE). 2. Trudi reviewed the annual report of User Education Services for 1997-98, in order to describe the big picture of instruction activities throughout the Libraries. Maggie had also produced some descriptive data from fall 1998. However time ran short; they will be reviewed at next meeting. 3. One of the instruction programs that needs immediate attention is the ENGL 101 program, which is currently managed by Steve Spohn. Carleton, Maggie, and Trudi agreed to serve on a subcommittee to work with Steve on improving the scripts and materials and considering more substantial long-range changes in how we deliver these classes. (Postscript: Steve will chair the subcommittee, and Marti Hooker will also participate). Committee members contributed several other suggestions for future action:    * Require/suggest that all library student employees and new staff attend the four general classes offered, in order to learn what is taught and see how instruction is conducted. This effort should be coordinated with others involved in staff orientation such as Bette Ann Hubbard or Sue Baughman.    * Keep the "Lost in the Library" script on the Web site and keep it up to date. Add new information about Hornbak collections and study areas.    * Encourage library administrators to participate in orientation activities, as a role model to other staff. For example, Lori Goetsch has volunteered for VICTOR/EBSCO classes and Orient Express.    * Librarians who teach faculty/graduate student seminars should consider moving off-site, to where faculty have their meetings, colloquia, or brown bag lunches. A portable computer and LCD projector are available for loan from ITD.    * Vendor reps who are known to be good presenters (e.g., ISI reps) might be invited to campus to conduct a faculty/graduate student seminar, in partnership with a librarian.    * Jim Greenberg of the Center for Teaching Excellence should be approached about librarians offering a CTE program session. 4. Upcomng agenda items:    * Evaluation of instructors (Trudi will bring a draft checklist to the next meeting and Pat also suppplied some materials).    * Scheduling of general classes for spring 1999.    * Updating scripts to include VICTORWeb.
