1. New Instruction Lab

There is a possibility that the Hornbake instruction room, 3203, will be closed in late April, early May. The furniture and equipment (LINK hardware, cables, LCD projector, etc.) would be moved and set up in a new instruction lab, McKeldin 2109 in May. Thirteen new workstations would be purchased for the new lab. McKeldin 2109 currently houses about then public workstations for Government Documents, including the GIS workstation. The GIS workstation would be moved to the Map Room, once environmental and aesthetic conditions are improved. Lori Goetsch, Sue Baughman, Marianne Ryan and Trudi Hahn have met to discuss this arrangement. A final decision is pending until Government Documents has a chance to consider all the ramifications for the GIS service, and LEC reviews and aproves the budget implications.

The new instruction room would give first priority to instructors of ENGL 101 classes. The second priority of use would be for other library instruction classes. A third use for the room, when no instruction sessions are scheduled, would be for general use. Signs would have to be displayed that would clearly indicate when the room was closed for a class and when it was open for general use. It was discussed that a printer should be installed and that rovers should be scheduled to provide assistance during general open hours.

[note: this week, all approvals are forthcoming, and Dave Cooper and Mary Dalto are moving ahead to order new equipment and furniture. Maggie Cunningham is working on the instruction lab layout.]

2. Grant Proposal: Special ENGL 101 Instructor

Trudi Hahn, with input from Linda Coleman and Steve Spohn, wrote a grant proposal for a special dedicated lecturer, probably an English graduate student, who would teach the library component of the ENGL 101 curriculum. The aim of this new position would be to improve the quality and consistency of teaching of information skills and to reach a higher percentage of ENGL 101 students. The proposal, asking for $1950, was submitted to the Dean of Undergraduate studies by the February 22 deadline; the outcome will be announced by mid-April. If approved, the special lecturer will begin in the fall 1999. If UM Libraries and the English department can show evidence that this position was successful, it will re-examineed for continued funding next year.

3. Video for ENGL 101

With approval, the project has been placed on hold for now.

4. Working with ENGL 101 TA's

The group discussed a User Education Services meeting with and discussing a broad range of information issues with the ENGL TA's, to help them develop course content to convey to their students. More on this later.
