1. Additions to Agenda

Administrative Memo #35

2. International Students

Trudi opened the discussion by asking the group to think about International students and how can we help them. They are a diverse group, not only from around the world, but they range from freshmen to graduate students. Maggie distributed the "Self-Guided McKeldin Library Tour for International Students" that she drafted. It is similar to Library Safari and is self-paced and self-guided. International students will it from the International Students Program Office and other means. A suggestion was made to have these available at the reference/information desk and maybe at Language House or International House. Trudi discussed the Libraries hosting a session of the International Coffee Hour on either March 7 or February 28, from 3:00-4:30. She suggested that during the coffee, library staff would discuss with students their concerns and research problems. She will confirm the date and ask for volunteers for this event.

Discussion next focused on whether we need a version of Library Safari for each branch. They could be an expanded self-guided version and could also be put online for wider dissemination. We will get back to this at a later time.

CLUE was asked to look at the Self-Guided Tour for International Students and give Maggie any comments by January 31st.

3. Update on UES activities:

Beyond the Basics - Maggie's idea is to make the worksheet specific to the class being taught (i.e., ENGL 392, 392, 393, 394, or 395). To answer the question of whether the instructors use these at all in their classes, Maggie will survey the instructors and if the answers are positive, she will modify the worksheet.

So far, 27 classes have been booked for instruction. (update: 37 classes total were scheduled).

Library Safari - So far, 2 classes have been booked. Instructors have until February 9 to sign up. No revisions in the script will be made at this time. UES will e-mail staff asking for volunteers for teacher and assistant positions.

ENES 100: Working Group Report (Gloria Chawla, Bob Garber, Barbara Nail-Chiwetalu, Jason Snyder, Trudi, Maggie, with assistance from Gina Calia) - ENES 100 is a required course for GEMSTONE and Engineering students. Library Safari will be adapted for this course for use with the EPSL facility and the kinds of materials that Engineering students use. CLIS student Jason Snyder is doing a Field Study in UES this spring, and will work on the script and exercises. The first class is February 19.

Big Glossy and Little Glossy - Since there are some delays around Big Glossy, Rebecca Wilson will work with UES to create a smaller version (a colored tri-fold) as a hand-out (update: the Little Glossy is ready now).

TILT- UES is still hoping to get the program from Texas and adapt it to our purposes for use in Fall 2001. This program will be used initially for ENGL 101 classes.

Home page button - In the fall, Trudi conducted a study of the Libraries' home page with CLIS students. They were especially confused about the "Getting Started" button; they suggested that it be renamed. Trudi asked if members would talk to their teams about suggestions for renaming the button. She mentioned "Help with Library Research" as one example.

Faculty/graduate student seminars - Web of Science, EndNote and ProCite and GIS seminars will be taught. No others have been proposed.

GIS schedule - Three types of classes will be offered this Spring - Basic; Spatial Analysis; and Textual to Spatial Analysis using GIS. Last fall 10 workshops were offered but only 2 or 3 people showed up for any given class. Maggie will help the instructors plan the scheduling for better attendance.

Administrative Memo #35 (McKeldin Lab-Special Events Room-Computer Labs) - Changes to procedures to use these rooms for outside users will be put on the Web page. Maggie created a Do's and Don'ts page and a checklist of extras for the room.

Room 2109 - The room has been expanded from 12 to 16 student workstations, with all accompanying hardware and software

4. Information Literacy Team discussion

Trudi reported on the meeting of Team Leaders and their discussion of issues and concerns.
