1. Performance assessment of librarian/instructors

Trudi distributed the latest draft of an assessment instrument, which incorporates all the suggestions made to date. It is organized into four categories by a recent article, "I Know It When I See It; Assessing Good Teaching." Trdui also distributed copies of the article for committee members to read themselves. Team reps can take the assessment instrument back to their teams for further discussion if they wish. The issue of performance assessment will be discussed at the TIP meeting on 1/14/99.

Pat raised the issue of whether our criteria, reflecting librarians' knowledge of a subject and preparation for a class should be measured. She suggested that Trudi could talk to the faculty involved and find out how well the librarian was prepared, how well he/she communicated before the class, how much needs assessment was done, and whether the session was satisfactory from the faculty member's perspective. Trudi will bring this assessment issue to the TIP meeting for further discussion.

2. Scheduling of spring classes

Maggie reviewed the process of how User Education Services analyzes the attendance data from the previous semesters in order to decide how many classes to hold and when to schedule them. Some of the charts and data she shared with the committee will be shown also at the TIP meeting.

3. GIS classes

Travis Clark's GIS classes in the fall were extremely successful, and several attendees asked for a more advanced session. Travis will offer more sessions in the spring, including an advanced class, and his classes will be folded into the User Education Services general class schedule. However, because of the special software requirements, advance registration will be required. Maggie showed Travis' flyer that will be distributed in addition to the general flyer.

4. VICTORWeb scripts

Maggie explained how she and Steve Spohn are in the process of revising class scripts to incorporate VICTORWeb. The committee decided that UnCover could be dropped from the basic class and the database instruction focused on Academic Search, provided that Betty Day had statistical evidence to show that UnCover was not used nearly as much as Academic Search. (Note: after the meeting, Maggie checked with Betty, who confirmed this).

5. Update on ENGL 101

Trudi reported on the meeting that she and Steve Spohn had in December with Linda Coleman, director of the Freshman Writing Program, and two student coordinators (Matthew Elliot and Adrianne DiMarco). Dr. Coleman raised the possibility of the English Department funding a teaching assistant whose sole responsibility would be to conduct the library sessions on VICTORWeb, database searching, and Web searching. In the meantime, however, the problems remain of the TAs who are not fully prepared to conduct the library sessions, or who choose not to hold such a session, or who have difficulty using the labs and the aging computers in Hornbake 3203. Therefore, this spring several partial solutions will be implemented: some of the Hornbake sessions will be moved to McKeldin, Steve will make himself available as much as possible to assist with classes, some of the Hornbake 486 machines will be upgraded by ITD to older Pentiums (to accommodate VICTORWeb), and a video will be created by Steve's CLUE subcommittee. The short video will provide the basic introduction that a TA would give in class. TAs may use the video if they choose. Even though this video will not be a cutting-edge education technology application, it is expected that much will be learned in the process and from the feedback of users, that will be useful later on when we tackle more sophisticated and advanced technologies.

6. Survey of team members on teaching experiences in the fall

Trudi reported briefly on the survey. The responses will be reported and discussed at the TIP meeting.
