1. Additions to the agenda?
No additional items were submitted.
2. Update on McKeldin Instruction Labs
McKeldin 4135 has been converted to a Windows NT lab. The EIC connection is only available now in McKeldin 4137. Maggie is working on updating instructions on how to use the equipment in the labs: www.lib.umd.edu/UES/labs.html
The pay-for-print station has been moved from McKeldin 2109 to 4133 (but is not yet working). Free printing will replace pay-for-print in that lab. ITD staff hope to move the printer closer to the door between the adjoining labs (4133 & 4135), so that students in both labs can easily use it.
The fluctuating temperatures in the labs -- too hot and bitter cold -- were discussed. Every time User Education receives a complaint about lab temperatures, they call Bill Hess. Maggie and Trudi suggested that if the temperature in a lab is of immediate concern, staff could call Bill Hess directly.
3. Update on EDCP 108 Working Group
General framework:
- EDCP 108 classes are usually 2 hours long, with an enrollment of 12 to 20 students.
- The main objective of the library session is to help students "get
to know McKeldin Library," mainly through hands-on exploration.
- EDCP 108 faculty will be informed about this session in August. If they wish to include a library session in their course, they will need to request it by the beginning of the fall semester, so that User Education Services can solicit volunteers and reserve McKeldin 4137.
Part 1 (20-25 minutes)
Lecture & demonstration, with a brief overview of the Libraries' home page, searching for known items in VICTOR Web (*not* subject searching), and interpreting VICTORWeb records. Discussion of library etiquette.
Part 2 (about 1 hour or so)
Divide students into teams with 4 on each team. Give each team a set of 8 exercises that requires them to walk around McKeldin Library, use certain materials, or use a computer to answer specific questions and write the answers on the exercise sheet.
Part 3 (5-20 minutes)
Ask students to return to room 4137 for a de-briefing or sharing of experiences. Ask each one of them, "What is one thing you learned today that you will share with a friend?"
Maggie and Judy Markowitz will pilot test this session with an EDCP 108 class July 13. They will report afterwards on how it went to the Working Group.
4. Preliminary report of findings and discussion of next steps in regard to subject specialists' classes. (handout)
Trudi presented a preliminary sample of what had been turned in from librarians on what they cover in their subject specific classes. The return rate was 44%; Trudi is hoping to raise that to 75%. CLUE team representatives will ask their team members who have not submitted any information yet if they would do so. This is voluntary, but the more data we have, the better the analysis and discussion.
There was a brief discussion of the preliminary findings.
5. Survey results from ENGL 101 teaching assistants.* (handout)
6. Survey results from ENGL 101 students.* (handout)
*A copy of either survey with results may be requested by calling Maggie at 5-9070.
65 ENGL 101 instructors were surveyed in fall 1999; 35 responded (54% return). The group discussed the findings. Maggie presented the survey results from the Spring 2000 survey of students taking ENGL 101. 474 students returned survey forms. The goal was to determine
the effectiveness of Library Day two to three weeks after the session was held. The group discussed the results.
General Announcements:
Peggy Antonisse has accepted a position as Librarian I, starting Fall'00, as a special lecturer and coordinator of the ENGL 101 library classes. It is unconfirmed whether Natalia White will be able continue in the fall. Koldo Garai will be the third special lecturer.
CLUE Tentative Meeting Agenda:
- Review of the 1999-2000 "pinksheets" (library instruction statistics).
- Continue to examine the findings in regard to subject specialists classes.
Next CLUE Meetings:
Wed. July 26, 10:30am - noon
Wed. August 23, 10:30am - noon
