CLUE Meeting Minutes - March 17, 1999

1. Update on ENGL 101 subgroup

A brainstorming session is planned for the ENGL 101 teaching assistants and Trudi. We want to involve TAs in designing the class content related to libraries and information literacy, find what the class should accomplish, determine optimum lab use, find the real problems or issues, and figure how far beyond VictorWeb the class should go. The following points should be discussed:

* Which and how many points should the class try to cover.
* Explain the importance of the integration of the library's role as well as research in general.
* Determine intellectual vs. actual priorities for the instructional class.
* Find out what must be mandated (involving curriculum guidelines) throughout the entire English program(s).
* Interfiling library material throughout the IAW workbook (is the workbook arranged categorically or chronologically?)
* What is the comfort level of TA's in teaching library instruction?
* What are the actual skills needed in order to get class materials across effectively?
Post-meeting update: The Freshman Writing Program has canceled the session with TA's, saying that they are too busy during April working on updating the IAW (Introduction to Academic Writing). Steve Spohn will work on updating the library portion of the IAW and will ask some TA's to review and react. That way we will get, at least indirectly, some feedback from the TA's.

2. Teaching VICTORWeb

Paula confirmed that the general classes could be cut down to an hour only without losing effectiveness. Also, it is not necessary to teach Victor Telnet. It would help the instructors if regular updates on VICTORWeb developments and enhancements could be disseminated and incorporated into scripts and training materials. VICTORWeb still needs Subject Browse capability along with securing Uncover. The choice of UMCP on the list of campus selections has to be narrowed down too; it would be nice to have this changed. Steve Spohn has created a new VICTORWeb guide and loaded it on the Libraries' Web site.

3. Commuter Breakfast on St. Patrick's Day early morning

Around 200 commuters were asked, "What library services do you use, and how can we make them better?," as well as some follow-up questions in individual interviews. Most responses were positive and the negative ones revolved around the copiers and lack of more weekend library hours. Commuter Affairs will type up the final survey results.

4. Scheduling of When is Your Paper Due? classes

The group agreed that the schedule worked fairly well. However, a crunch of high attendance was expected right before and after spring break. Maggie has reserved 4133 and 4135 together in case we get an overflow. In the fall of 1999, MCK 2109 will be available also as an instruction lab.

5. EDCP 108 classes

Last summer, Trudi and Maggie wrote an outline/assignment for EDCP 108 instructors to teach and give to their students. The assignment has four parts, designed to introduce freshmen to four basic ways to use library & information resources: reference book, book, Web site, journal articles. However, some faculty found the assignment a bit difficult to use. A sub-group was formed to revise the assignment: Bob. G., Maggie, Karen, Trudi.

6. Other large-enrollement courses to introduce library instruction

The group tentatively identified a list of undergraduate courses with high enrollements: e.g., Afro-American Studies, ENES 100, CCJS 100, COMM 230, JOUR 201. Trudi will try to find what others there are. CLUE needs to see what has already been done for these classes (e.g., CCJS 100 and COMM 230 have tutorial Web pages already), and what else in the way of standardized instruction should be offered. It is important to avoid too much duplication of content between these groups (a little overlap is probably good).

7. Tangled in the Web classes

It was ageed to keep them going but to update the content and find a new approach involving changing attitudes and evolving technology. A sub-group was formed to re-think the content and how it is marketed to the campus: Maggie, Bob G., Pat.
