CLUE Meeting Minutes - September 27, 2000

1. Additions to the Agenda?

None submitted

2. Update on Library Safari, Beyond the Basics and GIS Workshops, ENGL 101 Classes & Special Lecturers.

Maggie provided statistical updates, for the fall 2000 classes:

Library Safari workshops - 59 workshops were scheduled, from September 13 to November 8. A total of 24 volunteers, from 10 units (3 subject teams, Staff training & Development, Service Plus, Technical Services, Special Collections, Government Documents, User Education Svcs.) are teaching these classes; 17 are librarians, 7 are library staff.

Beyond the Basics workshops - A total of 20 volunteers from 6 units (3 subject teams, Service Plus, Public Services, User Education Svcs.) are teaching 41 classes, from September 18 to October 27.

GIS workshops - 6 introductory and 4 intermediate GIS using ArcView workshops have been scheduled, from September 18 to December 7. Chris Knouss and Lisa Russell, Government Documents, are team teaching. ENGL 101 "Library Day" Sessions - At last count (as requests are still coming in) 106 classes have been scheduled, from September 13 to October 31. There are 3 special lecturers again this semester. Peggy Antonisse is the Coordinator and Liaison to the English Freshman Writing Program. She has other teaching commitments outside the library, such as teaching HESP 120 - Introduction to Hearing & Speech. Sonya Brown is a graduate student with the English Department, and was an ENGL 101 teaching assistant last semester. Soroya Magalhaes-Wilson is a graduate student at CLIS, and has worked in Government Documents.

3. Update on Instruction Labs

All four McKeldin Library instruction labs have Windows NT. Rooms 4133 and 4135 now offer free printing for library instruction. Computers in room 2109 are configured to print on the Government Documents pay-for-print station. For McKeldin 2109, new tables have been ordered and four computers from the Hornbake location of the Performing Arts Library will be added to this room, bringing the total number of computers from 12 up to 16. Tina Rice is ordering new LINK cables. This lab should be reconfigured in time for the spring semester.

4. Faculty/Graduate Student Seminars - submissions?

There was another call for Faculty/Graduate Student Seminars, for the fall 2000 semester. Bob Kackley said that he would be submitting information on upcoming "Web of Science" seminars for November/December. (Update: Two Web of Science seminars are scheduled in the A.V. Williams Building, Jasmine PC Classroom on November 27, 2000 noon - 1:00 p.m., and November 30, 2000, noon - 1:00 p.m.)

5. Survey of Subject-Specific Classes & TIP Agenda

Trudi tried to get this item on the TIP agenda in early September, but at the time there was confusion over who was running the meeting and where was it to be held. She will try to add this item to a future TIP meeting.

6. Draft of UES 1999-2000 Annual Report - Review (handout)

Maggie distributed a draft of the 1999-2000 annual report for User Education Services (copies are available upon request) and asked CLUE members to review it and make comments, suggestions, etc. There was a brief discussion on clarifying the kinds of instruction activities that should be reported monthly, regarding the pink statistics sheet.

Sharing:

Maggie and Trudi are teaching a semester long UNIV 101 class. Trudi and Neal will be teaching two Gemstone classes on October 9, to a total of 160 Gemstone students.

A "thank you" letter to Trudi and Cindy, from the campus Writing Center, was distributed. Trudi and Cindy had conducted an orientation session for their staff at the beginning of the semester.
