CLASSES
These were the library orientation sessions held in FY 1999:

VICTOR/EBSCO and VICTOR/PERIODICAL INDEXES CLASSES
A basic introduction on how to use the VICTOR catalog and an EBSCO database (Academic Search Fulltext). This 90 minute class introduces the basics of finding books and other library materials in VICTOR, the online catalog, and finding journal articles in two general journal indexes: UnCover and EBSCO. Hands-on practice time and one-on-one instruction will be provided. The class is limited to 22 participants.

  • 30 VICTOR & Periodical Indexes classes offered in Fall 1998 (Sep 8 - Nov 5, 1998)

LOST IN THE LIBRARY?
A class for new library users and transfer students. This 45 minute class is a basic welcome to the UM Libraries, where highlights of getting to the libraries, finding your way around, using library materials and getting more help are addressed in a casual forum. The last 15 minutes of the class will be a tour (optional) of McKeldin Library, the main campus library. Class is limited to 25 participants.

TANGLED IN THE WEB
An introduction to strategies for effectively searching the Web. This 90 minute class introduces resources available through the UM Libraries' home page. This class emphasizes using a search engine to find the information and criteria for evaluating Web sites. Hands-on practice time and one-on-one instruction will be provided. Class is limited to 20 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis. We suggest you bring research topics with you.

WHEN IS YOUR PAPER DUE?
A class for the more advanced undergraduate researcher. This 90 minute class is for students who are getting ready to research and write a substantial paper, report or proposal. This class covers selecting and searching databases to find journal articles and other materials. Hands-on practice time and one-on-one instruction will be provided. This class is limited to 28 participants.

ACADEMIC UNIVERSE
An introduction to a multi-disciplinary database from Lexis-Nexis. This 60 minute class covers Academic Universe, a new Lexis-Nexis database that contains fulltext newspaper stories; company, industry and government news as well as legal information; and much more. Hands-on practice time and one-on-one assistance will be provided. Class is limited to 20 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis. We suggest you bring research topics with you.

INTRODUCTION TO GIS USING ARCVIEW
Basic class: Introduction to ArcView is a two hour workshop that teaches the basic operations of the popular ArcView GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software. Intermediate class: Analysis with ArcView workshop is a two hour advanced workshop that explores the more complex query and analytical functions of ArcView. Registration is required for both workshops.
