The McKeldin Library instruction labs are rooms 2109, 6101, 6103, and 6107.
One of the goals of the University Libraries' mission is to "provide assistance in the use of scholarly information resources...through instruction". To fulfill this mission, the Libraries have created a very large information literacy program.
Due to the enormous size of this program of instruction (i.e., 1,000+ classes, tours, workshops, seminars, orientations conducted annually), librarians need unrestricted access to all instruction labs, especially during specific times of the academic year. These times include: the last week of August, and all of September, October, February, March, and the first week of April. It is during these times that the library instruction season is at its peak. All non-library instruction related activities are prohibited from taking place in these rooms during these periods.
Instruction lab 6103 may be reserved by library staff (and rented by non-library individuals and/or groups) during the months listed above, as well as other times of the year, for presentations, staff training purposes, and other activities. This space is a presentation room; it is unequipped with student workstations.
Non-Library Individuals (i.e., a course instructor) and/or groups (i.e., a summer program) wanting to use a McKeldin Library instruction lab for non-library related activities, are required to rent these spaces on an hourly basis. User Education Services cannot guarantee that labs will be available on the date and time requested. Requests must be submitted at least 2 weeks in advance, and payment made in full.
Responsibilities of Lab Users: All lab users (e.g., UM librarians, faculty & staff, UMUC, non-campus groups) are expected to abide by the duties outlined on the
My Responsibilities Checklist, on each occasion a lab is used.
Downloading/Removing Software:
Library instructors wanting to download and demonstrate specific software applications for their classes will need to contact User Education Services for permission and assistance. Requests must be submitted at least 2 weeks in advance of the session. User Education Services will work with the requester and the Libraries' Information Technology Division to insure that applications are properly loaded and then removed from instruction lab computers.
Unauthorized software will be removed without notice. Modifying existing software and/or network configurations on McKeldin Library instruction lab computers is a violation of University's
Policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources.
