Teaching About Academic Integrity: What Happens in College

Diane Harvey, Lucy Holman, and Shakuntala Dhanesar

Maryland Educational Media Organization (MEMO) 2005
October 21, 2005 Ellicott City, MD

College and university librarians are often unsure what incoming students have been taught in high school about plagiarism and academic integrity. School library media specialists often don't know what expectations the higher education community has for their students in terms of the proper use and citation of sources. Three University System of Maryland librarians will talk about what their institutions expect incoming students to have learned about plagiarism and academic integrity, and how students are taught about these issues during their first year of college. They will also propose ways that we might work together to assure that students have the knowledge and skills they need to use sources responsibly.
