Directions

Researchers consult the holdings of the Archives and Manuscripts Department through two locations. Historical Manuscripts, Literary Manuscripts, and the University Archives may be requested through one public-service point on the first floor in Hornbake Library, the Maryland Room. The National Public Broadcasting Archives and the Library of American Broadcasting can be accessed via a separate public service point on the ground floor of Hornbake Library.

Directions to Campus by Automobile

From Baltimore and Points North
Take I-95 South to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495). Take Exit 27 and then follow signs to Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Virginia and Points South
Take I-95 North to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495). Continue North on I-95/I-495 toward Baltimore. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Virginia and Points West
Take I-66 East or I-270 South to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495). Go East on I-495 toward Baltimore/Silver Spring. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Annapolis and Points East
Take U.S. 50 to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495). Go North on I-95/I-495 toward Baltimore. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Washington, D.C.(Northwest/Southwest)
Take 16th St. North, which becomes Georgia Ave. North at Maryland/D.C. line. Continue North to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495). Go East on I-495 toward Baltimore. Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park). Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. Turn right on Campus Drive.

From Washington, D.C.(Northeast/Southeast)
Take Rhode Island Ave. (U.S. 1 North) which becomes Baltimore Ave. North at Maryland/D.C. line. Proceed through the city of College Park. Turn left at Campus Drive.

Directions to Campus via Metrorail

From Washington, D.C.
Take the Red Line train (towards "Glenmont") and get off at the "Gallery Place-Chinatown" or "Fort Totten" station. Then transfer to the Green Line train (towards "Greenbelt") and get off at the "College Park/U of MD" station. Get on the UM Shuttle bus for the free ride to the campus.

Directions to Hornbake Library once on campus

From Campus Drive

Continue straight until you reach the circle with the floral "M". Proceed 180 degrees around the "M", continuing on Campus Drive up the hill. You will pass the Stamp Student Union on the right. Just past the student union will be a stop sign. Turn right onto Union Lane. On your left, you will see the entrance to the parking garage. This garage is manned by an attendant and costs $2.00/hour to park (maximum $8/day).

After exiting the parking garage on foot, return to Campus Drive. At the intersection of Union Lane and Campus Drive, turn left, heading back down the hill on Campus Drive towards the "M" Before you reach the "M" you will see a large plaza to your left. Hornbake Library is at the eastern (bottom) of the plaza. Enter at the front entrance underneath the pillars. Click here for a map of the area.

Alternate parking options for Hornbake Library include the Stadium Drive Garage and the Paint Branch Drive Visitor Lot. Directions to these parking lots are available via the Department of Transportation Services.

Hornbake Library is located off of Campus Drive at the eastern (bottom) end of Hornbake Plaza. It is just up the hill from the traffic circle with the floral "M" and down the hill from the Adele H. Stamp Student Union. Enter at the front entrance underneath the pillars. Click here for a map of the area.
