B. POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Within a team environment, works closely with others to plan for and develop Libraries digital projects.  Performs original cataloging and complex copy cataloging of electronic resources and other materials and formats as time allows.  Participates in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. Coordinates and facilitates inter- and intra- production team activities, facilitates team communications, participates in fostering an environment of shared responsibility, and participates in developing and promoting team plans and vision.  As team member, works directly with team members and team leader to plan, develop and implement ongoing activities, policies and special projects and establish and achieve team goals and objectives.  Provides leadership through active participation on teams and committees at the production group, division, and Library level and within the profession.

 

 

C. ORGANIZATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Responsible for the shared administration of the Monographs-Continuing Resources Production Team. May serve as team leader and, in that capacity, reports to the Original Cataloging Production Group Leader. The University of Maryland Libraries promotes a team based, collaborative, continuous learning environment. Librarians hold faculty status and contribute to the teaching, service and research mission of the University.

 

D. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

1.       Advises on the application of appropriate metadata schema for digital objects and assists in defining digital project parameters.  In collaboration with others, plans for the translation of metadata between formats and participates in the integration of metadata from a variety of sources for search and display within and across collections. 
2.       Within Original Cataloging Production Group, coordinates efforts to provide bibliographic control and access to digital collections.  Provides training and guidance as needed. 
3.       Participates in local efforts to educate the Library and the University community on digital library issues.
4.       As needed, performs original and complex copy cataloging for electronic resources and other materials according to AACR2, LCRIs, LC classification, LCSH, and MARC via OCLC and the library’s integrated library system. 
5.       Participates in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging as a BIBCO and/or CONSER contributor. Contributes to and enhances records for the NACO and SACO programs as appropriate.
  1. Responsible for ensuring that materials are processed accurately in a timely and cost effective manner, while maintaining the integrity of the UM Libraries OPAC.
  2. Develops and implements (in consultation with the Team and Group Leaders) cataloging policies, standards, goals, and procedures, especially as they pertain to digital collections, and strives to continuously improve workflow.
  3. Contributes to the planning, development, coordination, and implementation of initiatives within the Production Group. Is eligible to serve as the Monographs-Continuing Resources Production Team Leader on a rotating basis with other faculty in the team.  Also participates in Library and Divisional planning activities
  4. Maintains knowledge of trends in digital initiatives, cataloging standards and library automation, including metadata harvesting, through participation in regional and national meetings and listservs.
  5. Continues to acquire new skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to improve work processes, and shares them with Production Team and Group members.
  6. Collaborates and communicates with other units within the UM Libraries, with particular concern for their digital collections, cataloging priorities and access issues, and to continually improve service for patrons.
  7. Contributes to creating accurate and timely reports and documentation.
  8. Participates in the evaluation of training needs of team members and assists in their implementation.
  9. Fulfills “Technical Services’ Common Expectations of Staff” and performs other duties as requested.

Interactions:

 

Primary interactions include all levels of staff within the Production Group and throughout the division.  Outside of TSD, primary interactions include the Information Technology Division, Digital Library Initiatives staff.  Other interactions include members of faculty and staff in other academic institutions and libraries and in professional associations.

F.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Academic Level:

 

Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or equivalent combination of degrees and experience.

 

Practical Experience:  Minimum of two years of relevant cataloging experience in an academic, research or special library in one or more of the following areas: monographs cataloging, serials cataloging, or authority control.  Familiarity with one or more of the following metadata standards: EAD, TEI, VRA Core, Dublin Core, RDF, CIDOC, METS, MODS, or others.  Experience with creation and/or management of digital objects in various text, image, sound, and/or video formats.  Knowledge of and proficiency with automated library systems, AACR2, LCRIs, LC classification, LCSH, and MARC 21 formats via a national bibliographic utility. Understanding of technical services operations, Library of Congress cataloging practices and procedures, and emerging cataloging issues and trends. Working knowledge of at least one modern European language.
