University of Maryland Libraries Strategic Plan

Horizontal Rule

PREFACE

This document has several important parts.

  • First, it contains an updated mission statement, a compilation of values statements, and a vision statement for the University of Maryland Libraries.
  • The revised goals of the plan itself reflect progress made and progress still needed since the April 1997 plan, "Building the Collections and Services of the University of Maryland College Park Libraries: Goals, Plans and Budget Requests in the Context of the University Strategic Plan." Moreover, the revised goals indeed keep the Libraries’ plan in the framework of the campus’ strategic initiatives.

I especially commend to your attention the Environmental Assessment -- 1999 and the Assessment of Levels of Achievement of Current Plan in the appended report. The Libraries’ achievements are impressive and point the way to a very positive future.

These present revisions to the 1997 plan are a mid-course correction for a plan intended to be in effect for a three-year cycle. The Libraries will consider further the Task Force’s suggested cycles of planning and evaluation.

This revised plan has been reviewed and approved by the Provost’s Office, the University Library Council, and library management. It reflects much staff work and thought.

We present and recommend this plan to all concerned as a tool to direct our unique efforts and achieve our shared purposes.
