Audiovisual Collections
at the National Trust Library

In addition to its book and periodical collections, the National Trust Library (NTL) houses postcards, black and white and color photographs, transparencies, negatives, slides, slide programs (some with audio), audio in various formats, 16mm and 35mm film, and video in various formats. Their creation dates range from the 1950s to the present, with the bulk ranging from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. There are also some copies of late 19th and early 20th century photographs in the photograph collection.

The main subjects covered are U.S. architecture and localities, historic preservation principles and techniques, National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) activities and history, urban planning, legal issues in historic preservation, and various facets of historic preservation such as maritime preservation, rural preservation, the Main Street program, etc.

The bulk of the collections were gathered and maintained by the now-defunct audiovisual department of the NTHP, and were received by University of Maryland with the rest of the NTL collection in 1986. That department maintained the materials as a browsing collection for various departments at the Trust including Publications (Preservation News, Preservation Magazine), Public Affairs, and others who generated and used audio-visual materials.

The National Trust Library staff is currently processing this material to provide better access for our patrons. As we move forward, we will be adding information to this website. In the meantime, if you would like to find out more about these collections, please contact us.
