Architecture, Planning and Preservation Librarian
REPORTS TO:
Branch Manager - Art and Architecture Libraries
NATURE OF THE WORK:
Based in the Architecture Library, located in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and working under the direction of the Branch Manager, Art and Architecture Libraries and within the collaborative, team-based learning environment of the University of Maryland Libraries, the Architecture, Planning, and Preservation Librarian works with other members of the Art and Architecture Team to design and administer an innovative program for public service and user education in the subject areas of architecture, urban studies and planning, historic preservation, and real estate development, that incorporates new technologies, interdisciplinary models, and analysis of user needs. Primary responsibilities shall be to provide bibliographic instruction; to provide in depth reference assistance; and to engage in continued outreach activities to the department. The incumbent shall also participate in collection development and management, working with the other Architecture, Planning and Preservation Librarian.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:ALA-accredited M.L.S., M.I.S., or comparable degree.
Preferred:
Knowledge of architecture, urban studies and planning, historic preservation, real estate development or a related discipline, as demonstrated through academic degrees, course work, publications or job experience.
EXPERIENCE
Experience providing reference and instructional services and/or collection development and management in an academic or special library.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Understanding of current and emerging trends in one or more of the disciplines specified above and familiarity with electronic resources and information technologies, related to these subject areas. Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications. Strong public service orientation. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively with faculty, students, and library staff in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to meet promotion and permanent status requirements of library faculty. Preferred: Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic library services/resources as they relate to scholarly communication and publishing.

In collaboration with the other Architecture, Planning and Preservation Librarian and other librarians on the Art and Architecture Team, designs and administers an innovative program for public service and user education in the subject areas of architecture, urban studies and planning, historic preservation, and real estate development, that incorporates new technologies, interdisciplinary models, and analysis of user needs.
- Participates in a program to provide regular reference service at a public desk in the Art Library.
- Provides specialized and general reference service to users with information needs in the subject areas of architecture, urban studies and planning, historic preservation, and real estate development.
- Participates in Libraries-wide online reference services.
- Provides basic library instruction to the University through courses organized by User Education Services.
- Seeks ways to monitor user needs and adapt reference and user education programs as appropriate.
- Collaborates with the Branch Manager and the other Architecture, Planning and Preservation Librarian on Special Collections projects.
- Participates as a full member of the Arts and Humanities Collection Management Collaborative.
Along with the other Architecture, Planning and Preservation Librarian, serves as liaison to the faculty and students in the School of Architecture, Planning and Historic Preservation to insure that their information needs are being met and to promote the Libraries’ services and resources.
- Provides course-related library instruction and research consultations in support of School courses.
- Develops and updates course web pages and subject guides in support of research in the subject areas taught at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
- Participates in decisions related to collection management and development, such as serial review and database assessment; selection of new acquisitions; evaluation of existing collections; collection development policies, and fund management.
Promotes services available through the libraries:
- Serves on library and university committees as appropriate.
- Participates in activities of professional organizations and/or other community groups related to librarianship.
- Serves as a full member of the Art and Architecture Team with normal responsibilities to participate in the work of a self-managing Team and participate in the completion of tasks agreed upon in Team meetings.
