NATURE OF WORK:
Public Services Librarian with liaison responsibilities to the Urban Studies and Planning Program and Real Estate Development Program, both in the School of Architecture. The incumbent is responsible for three categories of duties: (1) Librarianship, (2) Service, and (3) Scholarship and Creativity. Librarianship includes responsibilities to provide general and specialized reference assistance, general and specialized library instruction, and specialized collection management tasks. Service includes a variety of work for the Libraries, the University, and/or the profession, typically through service on teams and committees beyond the assigned areas of responsibility. Scholarship and Creativity may be of several types promoting the discovery, integration, application and teaching of knowledge. Resident in the Architecture Library, the incumbent is a member of the Art and Architecture Team and works with colleagues to develop collections and services in both the Architecture and Art Libraries.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: M.L.S., M.I.S., or comparable degree. PREFERRED: Advanced degree in architecture, urban studies and planning, or a related discipline (such as community development, economics, political science, engineering)

EXPERIENCE: Subject background in urban studies and planning or a related discipline, demonstrated through academic degrees, course work, publications, or substantive experience. Experience providing reference and instructional services and/or collection development and management in an academic or special library serving similar clientele. Understanding of current and emerging trends in the disciplines specified above and familiarity with electronic resources, information technologies, and collection management. Demonstrated abilities to work effectively and creatively with library staff and patrons. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to meet promotion and permanent status requirements. PREFERRED: Three years of professional experience in an academic library or a special library.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will fulfill the following responsibilities along with other duties as assigned:

Serves as liaison to Urban Studies and Planning Program and Real Estate Development Program, both within the School of Architecture. Responds to faculty requests for new acquisitions and library instruction.

Provides in-person and virtual reference services. Covers the Reference Desk at the Art Library; schedules in-depth subject-specific reference consultations, as needed; provides digital reference, of a more general nature, via Maryland AskUsNow!

Provides basic library instruction to the University through courses organized by User Education Services. Creates and revises Web pages (tutorials) for library instruction classes along with Web guides for doing research in various general topics or areas.

Serves as collection development librarian for the subject areas of planning, urban studies, real estate development, and landscape architecture (design aspects) and is responsible for managing fund lines for those subjects. Selects new titles (print and e-formats), participates in discussions on the care and storage of collections, keeps abreast of new and electronic resources.

Participates as a full member of the Arts and Humanities Collection Management Collaborative, which conducts serial reviews, recommends database subscriptions, and addresses other collection management issues.

Participates on various Library teams, Library committees, and /or University committees as appropriate.

Participates in activities of professional organizations and/or other community groups related to librarianship and/or urban studies and planning.

Serves on the Art and Architecture Team, which manages the collections and services in two Library facilities.

Contributes to the completion of tasks, as listed in the Team's annual work plan.
