IntroductionAs part of the National Program for the Preservation of Agricultural Literature (NPPAL), staff at the University of Maryland Libraries have compiled a bibliography of the literature of agriculture and rural life in Maryland, published from 1820 through 1945. One of the state's most significant agricultural publications is The American Farmer (1819-1897), recognized by many as the first widely circulated agricultural journal. Begun by postmaster of Baltimore John Stuart Skinner, the publication covers a variety of topics related to agriculture and rural life and was endorsed by such prominent men as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
Although Maryland lays claim to publications concerning the agriculture of the entire country, most of the literature in the bibliography focuses on agriculture in Maryland. Among these state-focused, but still widely applicable publications, are the Maryland Board of Natural Resources' Maryland Tidewater News, which represents a variety of materials documenting agriculture's impact on the Chesapeake Bay, and the publications of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station, which record over 100 years of agricultural research. BibliographyPlease note that most of the citations in the bibliography are based on catalog records, not on project staff's review of the items. Refer to the Methodology section for scope and content notes. An earlier version of this bibliography is searchable through AgBib, a compilation by Michigan State University of several states' bibliographies. Queries may be limited by state using the Advanced Search option. |
