Maryland Folklore Archives
Abstract
The Maryland Folklore Archives consist of materials collected and created primarily by students of Maryland institutions of higher education in Salisbury, Frostburg, and College Park. The Salisbury and Frostburg materials were transferred to the English Department at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1976. In 1996, the Archives and Manuscripts Department of the University Libraries assumed physical ownership of 48 linear feet of the Maryland Folklore Archives. A second portion of approximately 74 linear feet was formally transferred from the English Department to the Archives and Manuscripts Department in 2006. A third accession of 8.5 linear feet was received from the English Department and added to the collection in 2008. A fourth accession of 6.00 linear feet was received from the English Department and added to the collection in 2009. Although the contents of the collection were collected or created by citizens of Maryland or students at Maryland institutions, the subjects of their projects range widely and are not confined to the state of Maryland. The types of materials include student papers; photographic prints, slides, and negatives; audio recordings; notecards; and realia. The collection is unprocessed, but preliminary inventories have been prepared.
