Abstract
The Maryland Division of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded in 1942 to unite the five local branches of the organization which already existed in Maryland. The collection contains the operating records of the Maryland Division, as well as its charters, bylaws, and memorabilia. Also included are extensive program and project files, and the records of several of the division's presidents. Subjects covered include the division's history and operations, legislative concerns of the members, programs sponsored, projects undertaken, and interrelationships with the Mid-Atlantic Region and the Educational Foundation of the Association.

Historical Note
Founded in Boston in 1882 by sixty-five female college graduates, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is the oldest and largest national organization of women in the United States. Originally formed to encourage and improve education for women, the AAUW soon broadened its purpose and activities. While advocacy for women and women's educational opportunities have remained basic elements of the AAUW program, international relations, cultural interests, and the quality of community life have become long-standing commitments as well. Currently, the AAUW offers college-educated women conferences and seminars on such subjects as the United Nations and the American family, fellowships for doctoral or postdoctoral work, grants for members to return to school after a five-year absence, a coalition of woman-power influencing local, state, and national legislation, and several publications. The AAUW and the AAUW Educational Foundation are headquartered in Washington, D.C.; this building also houses a comprehensive library and archival collection on women.
The AAUW counts members in over 1900 communities and fifty-three countries around the world. Most women affiliate with a local branch. AAUW members are also members of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW), which the association helped to found in 1919 to unite women worldwide in working toward common goals and international understanding.
Sixty years after the founding of the AAUW, the Maryland State Division was organized. Enthusiasm for uniting the five existing Maryland branches in a state division stemmed from the South Atlantic Regional Conference, held in Baltimore, April 24-25, 1942. Dr. Elizabeth Fuller Jackson, Vice President from the South Atlantic Region, was asked by the delegates from the Baltimore City, College Park, Carroll County and Frederick County branches to explain the steps by which a state division could be organized. This handful of delegates then volunteered to lead in the founding of the new division.
There were two primary motivating factors behind the desire to create a Maryland State Division. First, Maryland was the only South Atlantic state without a state organization and one of only six states in the entire country without one. Secondly, it appeared likely that the upcoming 1942 national convention would be canceled, in which case national questions would be referred to the state groups for decisions. Maryland, without a state organization, would not have a vote.
With these factors in mind, the Maryland State Division was officially launched on November 18, 1942 when delegates from four Maryland branches met and adopted Bylaws, appointed committee chairmen, and elected Mrs. J.D. Duve of the Frederick branch the first Maryland State Division president. The initial membership of the Division was 471 individual members.
The current objectives of the Maryland Division of the AAUW are to assist in the formation of new branches in the state, to give and receive suggestions from other state branches, and provide backing for programs of individual Maryland chapters.
The division also actively sponsors a variety of programs and projects in such areas as community, education, cultural interests, international relations, women's issues, and legislative concerns.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The archives of the Maryland Division of the American Association of University Women cover the period 1935 to 2002. They consist of correspondence, publications, reports, minutes, charters, bylaws, financial materials, newspaper clippings, photographs, and memorabilia. Also included are extensive program and project files and records from a number of the division's presidents. Subjects covered in the records include the division's history and operation, legislative concerns of the members, programs sponsored, projects undertaken, branch activities, and interrelationships with other state divisions in the region and the Educational Foundation of the AAUW.
Custodial History and Acquisition Information
The Maryland Division donated the bulk of the archives of the Maryland Division of the American Association of University Women to the University of Maryland at College Park Libraries between October 1985 and July 1987. Division officers and other members have added to the collection periodically.

After an initial survey, a series structure was devised in cooperation with AAUW Maryland Division members. Several members from the Maryland Division donated their time to process materials into the series, during which time paper clips were removed, refoldering was done, national publications were weeded out, and materials were reboxed. Mary Bailey, Louise Dickson, Charlotte Ferguson and Helen Koste originally processed the collection in August 1989. Photographs and memorabilia were sorted out and transferred to separate collections. The AAUW members wrote initial descriptions. The staff of the Archives and Manuscripts Department produced editing and additional descriptions. Virginia Beauchamp, Sally Lent, Julie Snell, Jean Thompson and Gwen Turnbull processed a large accretion to the collection in June 1997. Pamela Alsop, Marianne Beane, and Patricia Rettig processed another large accretion in August 1997. At this time, materials in Series IV relating to division presidents, conventions/conferences and the Maryland State Board of Directors/Executive Committee were removed and relocated to Series II, VIII and XVIII respectively. In 2003, Terry Ann Sayler processed materials received since 1997, including scrapbooks, photographs and videotapes from the Computer, Math, Science Career Learning Day Fun Fairs. Additional materials were added in 2006.

Detailed Description of the Collection
Series 1: Charter and Bylaws, 1942-1997 (2.0 linear feet)
This series contains the original constitution and Bylaws of the Maryland Chapter, dated June 1942, as well as subsequent revisions, and correspondence relating to the charters and Bylaws. Also included are reports and proposed amendments of the AAUW's Committee on Revision, and the charter, bylaws, policies and Strategic Plan for the National AAUW, and various resolutions passed by the state division. In addition, there is some correspondence, dated 1942 to 1992, regarding Bylaw revisions for Maryland branches. Arrangement is chronological with the exception of Branch Bylaws, which are alphabetical by branch.

These files document the activities, goals, and involvement of the division's presidents, beginning with the first president, Helen Duve, and concluding with Marilyn Thomas Leist. Anne Prange's files comprise the most extensive portion of the collection. The records consist primarily of correspondence, publications, conference materials, and reports. Arrangement is chronological by president and then alphabetical under each president. Note: Several files are restricted due to privacy issues.

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, publications, clippings, scrapbooks, and listings relating to various projects undertaken by the Maryland Division, including work in such areas as education, career counseling, AAUW organizational history, and other areas of interest to the division. Included among the material relating to education is a guide for women returning to college, scholarship information, a study of junior colleges, a survey of day care programs in Maryland, and material relating to training programs in computer science and creative writing. Materials generated by the Women's Employment Related Questions Committee (formerly called Employment Opportunities for Mature Women and Problems related to their Employment) include pamphlets and reports on career opportunities for women. Efforts to chronicle the Maryland Division's history resulted in several publications including a "Who's Who of Maryland Women, 1930-1976," as well as several histories of the division and its branches. Other material relates to AAUW's leadership training programs, participation in a White House Conference on Aging, a 1958 "Study of Mental Health Facilities in the State of Maryland," and various "Computer, Math, Science Career Learning Day and Fun Fairs" sponsored by the state division. Included are reports of the Chairman of the Legislation Committee, correspondence relating to the organization of the annual lobbying day in Annapolis, and legislation of interest to the Program Committee. Issues of concern include equal pay for equal work, fair housing, insurance discrimination, education, legal rights for women, support for the Maryland Library Association, and the Equal Rights Amendment. This series consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, financial material, lists, brochures, and clippings chronicling the Maryland Division's involvement with the AAUW's Educational Foundation. The AAUW's Educational Foundation was designed to provide fellowship support for women, foster research, promote excellence in public education, encourage international education, and to collect materials relating to "accomplishments of University women." Correspondence, memoranda, pamphlets, clippings, programs and agendas of the South Atlantic and Middle Atlantic Regions of the AAUW. The reorganization of the AAUW into new regions was instituted in July 1961, with MAR being created from divisions in both the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic. The Maryland Division was originally included in SAR, along with Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. MAR contains divisions in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Included is material generated by AAUW regional conferences and various activities such as workshops and the MAR Goodwill trip to Europe. Arrangement is alphabetical by topic.

Series 14: Photographs, 1950-2001 and undated (3.25 linear feet)
Photographs relate to various AAUW activities, including the presentation of the division archives to the University of Maryland, the founding of the Gaithersburg branch, art exhibits at conventions, a 1982 ERA rally in Baltimore, photographs from various Computer, Math, Science Career Learning Day and Fun Fairs, and various conventions and special events. Series 15: Memorabilia, 1942-1988 and undated (47 items)
This series consists of resolutions, a pen, a ribbon, needlepoint pins, a drawn design, a small medallion, an "I Did It!" button, "I Can Do It!" stamp and "Metrics Made Easy" conversion chart from the Computer, Math, Science Career Learning Day, a black AAUW paperweight, two printing blocks, a gavel and stand, a banner, and a Foundation Night medallion. Resolutions comprise the bulk of the materials and include recognitions from President Ronald Reagan, governors of Maryland, and the Maryland House of Delegates and Senate. These materials have been transferred to the memorabilia collection (#795-#800, #803-#820, #1020-1026, #1099-1103, #1552-1553, #1567-1572, and #1894-1895).

Series 21: Audio/Visual Materials, 1971-1996 (1.50 linear feet)
Audiotapes, VHS, Betamax, and magnetic tapes of conference presentations, the 1990 and 1991 Computer, Math, Science Fun Fairs. Legal Advocacy and Educational Foundation issues are included. Audio tapes include recordings of the proceedings of the 1977 National Convention, a 1971 Career Symposia, an Affirmative Action Conference, a talk on the need for shelters for the victims of family abuse, a radio announcement soliciting AAUW members, and sixteen audio cassettes from the 1984 convention. A slide carousal containing images from the Educational Foundation Slide Show is included with two accompanying audio tapes. The two video tapes each feature several segments, including discussions of women's history in Maryland, the AAUW's history, environmental issues, and the Red Cross's Bloodmobile drives. Arrangement is chronological.

The Archives and Manuscripts Department also includes among its holdings the archives of the College Park Branch of the American Association of University Women. This branch was instrumental in the establishment of the Maryland Division and is one of the oldest branches in the state. Its records clearly document the operation and community involvement of this active branch. The Archives and Manuscripts Department also holds significant amount of material from the Rockville and Kensington branches and for the Metropolitan Area Mass Media Committee.
