Papers of Charles Bridgham Hosmer, Jr.
Abstract
Charles Bridgham Hosmer, Jr. (1932-1993) is widely regarded as the foremost historian of the historic preservation movement. His two major works, Presence of the Past: The History of the Preservation Movement in the United States Before Williamsburg and Preservation Comes of Age: From Williamsburg to the National Trust, 1926-1949 , have become standard teaching and reference texts in the historic preservation field. Hosmer's papers primarily consist of materials relating to these two books, including biographical and research notes, correspondence, manuscript drafts, articles from newspapers and periodicals, and book chapters. Also included in the collection are drafts of other articles and books Hosmer wrote, oral history interview tapes and transcripts, photographs, and microfilm.

Historical Note
Charles Bridgham Hosmer, Jr., (1932-1993) is widely regarded as the foremost historian of the historic preservation movement. Two of his books, Presence of the Past: the History of the Preservation Movement in the United States before Williamsburg (Putnam, 1965) and Preservation Comes of Age: from Williamsburg to the National Trust, 1926-1949 (University Press of Virginia, 1981), have become standard teaching and reference texts in the field of preservation. In Presence of the Past , Hosmer asserted that "the pioneers of the preservation movement prepared the American people to accept the idea of spending money for the seemingly profitless activity of saving a few of the spots that contributed to the study of history or the enjoyment of beauty."
Born in Naples, Italy, on February 23, 1932, Hosmer attended public schools in Washington, D. C. He received a B. A. in history from Principia College, Elsah, Illinois (1953). After a two-year stint in the U. S. Army Signal Corps, Hosmer married Jeralyn Prugh in 1955. The Hosmers had two children, Kathryn and Jonathan. Hosmer served as a public school teacher in South Huntington, New York, from 1956 to 1959, after receiving a M. A. from Teacher's College of Columbia University in 1956. He completed his Ph.D. in history at Columbia in 1961.
Hosmer's lifelong dedication to the preservation movement grew from an interest in early American houses that began in his youth. He became actively involved in the movement after his 1961 return to his undergraduate alma mater where he served on the faculty for more than thirty years, eventually occupying the Jay P. Walker Chair in History. Early in his career at Principia College, Hosmer began to contribute regularly to the college alumni magazine. Those contributions explored the history of the physical development of the campus. Through Hosmer's efforts, the college gained both inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and recognition as a National Historic Landmark in April 1993.
Hosmer was active in many professional societies, including the American Historical Association, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Eastern National Park and Monument Association, and the American Association for State and Local History. In the 1970s, he served on the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council. Hosmer was also honored by the Eastern National Park and Monument Association as a Distinguished Associate (1981) and by the American Association for State and Local History for Elsah: A Historic Guidebook (1967), written with Paul O. Williams.
Charles Hosmer died in August 1993, a few months after his retirement from teaching at Principia College. At the time of his death, he was at work on a comprehensive biography of Charles E. Peterson, founder of the Historic American Buildings Survey.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The bulk of the Charles Bridgham Hosmer, Jr., papers relates directly to Presence of the Past and Preservation Comes of Age. Hosmer collected the material, which dates from the mid-nineteenth century to 1991, over a thirty-two-year period (1959 to 1991). The papers contain biographical notes, correspondence, interview tapes and transcripts, research notes and notebooks, manuscript drafts, articles from newspapers and periodicals, and book chapters on various preservation topics.
The materials cover a broad range of preservation topics, including the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg; the historic preservation activities of the National Park Service; Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps projects; the establishment of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; and various preservation projects within the United States.
Custodial History and Acquisition Information
The University of Maryland Libraries received the materials that now constitute the Papers of Charles Bridgham Hosmer, Jr., as two separate donations. In 1989, the Eastern National Park and Monument Association donated eighty-four oral history audio tapes and transcripts (which comprise the bulk of Series IV) to the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection. Hosmer bequeathed the research materials he had accumulated in preparing Presence of the Past and Preservation Comes of Age to the UMCP Libraries to complement the previously received collection of oral histories; the additional materials arrived in fall 1993. The National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection retained approximately fifteen linear feet of Hosmer's preservation books and periodicals and transferred the remaining files and the original donation of the oral histories to the Archives and Manuscripts Department, which consolidated all Hosmer materials into a single collection.
Processing Information
Processed by Lori Voskiul, January 1994; Addenda incorporated and guide revised by James M. Harmon and Meg Alessi, 1996. Revised by Joanne Archer, May 2006.
Throughout processing, the Archives and Manuscripts staff maintained original order where possible. The processor transferred documents to acid-free folders and boxes and, wherever possible, replaced paper clips, staples, and mechanical binding materials with chemically inert clips. The staff separated all photographs, microfilm, audio tapes, and oversize items from the documents in the collection and placed them into appropriate storage units.

Detailed Description of the Collection
Series 1: Correspondence, 1961-1988 (1.50 linear feet)
The correspondence in this series relates to Hosmer's historic preservation research and the publication of Presence of the Past and Preservation Comes of Age. Many of the files contain ancillary materials, such as newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and annotated draft chapters. Although the correspondence dates from 1961 to 1988, the bulk of the material falls between 1972 and 1976.
Hosmer corresponded with architectural historians, restoration architects, National Park Service and National Trust for Historic Preservation officials, and preservationists active in local communities. Significant correspondents include George Palmer, Charles Peterson, Charles W. Porter, III, and Diane Maddex.
Subjects discussed include specific restoration projects (e.g. the Vieux Carre district in New Orleans and the San Xavier Mission in Texas), Hosmer's requests for comments on drafts of his books, and queries regarding the transcripts of his oral history projects. The correspondence also focuses on the activities and functioning of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) and the National Park Service.
Hosmer's arrangement of the correspondence--alphabetically by correspondent and chronologically within each file--has been retained. Located at the end of the alphabetically-arranged portion of the series, however, are several exceptions to this order; this group of files consists of correspondence arranged by topics rather than correspondent.

Series 2: Research Notes, undated (4.50 linear feet)
Series II contains Hosmer's research notes, most of which relate to Presence of the Past and Preservation Comes of Age. The notes were taken from primary and secondary materials dating from the mid-nineteenth century to 1985. The notes also include chronologies and histories of organizations and biographies of individuals compiled by Hosmer. As a whole, these notes are a significant resource on historic preservation; however, in many cases, information on individual subjects within the series is limited. Bibliographic citations (sometimes annotated) comprise a significant portion of this series.
The files in this series have been grouped under large subject categories. For a portion of the notes, Hosmer himself devised a variety of subject headings that have been retained and used in this series. These headings include architects, general criteria, general techniques, general business, bibliographic notes, state--city, states, states--sites--projects, and states--sites--research.
Almost all of the notes which did not fit under Hosmer's own headings have been sorted by type--Notes--Individuals, Notes--Miscellaneous, Notes--Publications, and Notes--Sites and Structures--and arranged alphabetically under these imposed divisions. "Notes--Sites and Structures" includes historic districts, sites, buildings, other structures, and objects as defined by the National Register of Historic Places criteria. Major sites or structures included in this portion of the series are sites of national significance such as Monticello and Mount Vernon.
A large portion of the notes to which Hosmer did not assign headings appears in this guide under the heading "Organizations." These notes contain information about a variety of institutions involved with historic preservation. Taken by Hosmer at the organizations' headquarters and elsewhere, they consist of information regarding specific sites or structures, correspondence, and biographical information. Notes from the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) and the National Park Service form the bulk of this division.
This series also includes five bound notebooks of material on sites and structures, organizations, and persons related to the historic preservation field.
The research notes have been arranged alphabetically by subject category; under each category, the individual files are arranged alphabetically.

Series 3: Manuscript Drafts and Page Proofs, undated (1.50 linear feet)
Series III includes annotated proofs of chapters or portions of chapters from a variety of Hosmer's publications. The bulk of the series consists of chapters from Preservation Comes of Age. A single chapter from Presence of the Past and drafts of some of Hosmer's earlier work comprise the remainder of the series. Among the latter are a set of research and bibliographic notes, chapter outlines, an abstract, and other associated material for his dissertation, "Old Houses in America: The Preservation Movement to 1926."
Series III also includes several files that appear to be drafts of other articles or books Hosmer wrote. These include two pages of an article entitled "The One Hundred Year Battle to Save Monticello" and an untitled manuscript regarding the growth of the historical programs of the National Park Service.
The series has been arranged alphabetically by publication title where known and alphabetically by chapter title within each publication division.

Series 4: Historic Preservation Oral History Transcripts and Tapes, 1959-1989 (12.50 linear feet)
Throughout his career, Hosmer interviewed many prominent individuals in the historic preservation field. This series consists of the tape recordings and transcripts of interviews which Hosmer conducted as part of his own research and for a separate project funded by the Eastern National Park and Monument Association.
There are three divisions in this series. The first includes transcripts of eighty-three of Hosmer's Eastern National Park and Monument Association interviews completed between 1981 and 1986. The second contains six transcripts of "Historic Preservation Interviews" conducted by Hosmer between 1959 and 1985 as well as miscellaneous--and often incomplete--interview transcripts which Hosmer collected from other repositories. Notes regarding transcripts of interviews which he did not conduct are also included. The originating repositories include Columbia University's Oral History Research Office, the University of California at Berkeley's Bancroft Library, and the National Park Service Archives at the Harpers Ferry Center. Several folders containing lists of interviews, partial indexes, and a notebook (as well as an incomplete transcript) on the 1962 interview with Horace M. Albright constitute the third division in this series, "Interview Notes and Indexes."
The copyright residing in the oral history interviews is shared by the interviewer and the interviewee, and, therefore, permission must be secured before citing or quoting from the transcripts in a publication. Hosmer, as the interviewer, allowed for open research access to all portions of the interviews that he controlled, and the University of Maryland Libraries made a systematic effort to obtain permission to open as many of the transcripts for research use as possible. There are three levels of restriction for the use of the materials in this series. Many of the interviewees consented to unrestricted use of their transcripts; others required researchers to obtain written permission before citing or quoting from their transcripts. Finally, some interviewees wanted their transcripts closed entirely either permanently or for the remainder of their lives.
The Archives and Manuscript Department staff has devised a numerical code to indicate conditions of access within the folder listing and has placed corresponding colored dots on the folders themselves: 1) No restrictions (green dot); 2) Open, but permission required for quotation (yellow dot); 3) Closed (red dot).
Each section of oral history transcripts is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the person interviewed. Eastern National Park and Monument Association interviews that are closed have been separated and arranged alphabetically in the first two boxes of the series. The cassette tapes from which the transcripts of the Eastern National Park and Monument Association transcripts were taken form a part of this series; a listing of these tapes appears in Appendix 2. The tapes fall under the same restrictions as the transcripts.
A detailed index to Hosmer's oral history interviews is available.

Series 5: Research Materials, 1860-1992 and undated (13.00 linear feet)
Series V consists of the primary and secondary source materials that Hosmer assembled during the course of his research and upon which he based many of the research notes in Series II. Representative items in this series are photocopies of correspondence and other documents, newspaper clippings, and periodical articles. The material in this series dates from 1860 to 1992, although most items were created between 1920 and 1960. A large portion of the series consists of material associated with the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and the role of the National Park Service in historic preservation.
Series V has been arranged into two groups. The first portion of the series is arranged in alphabetical order by state, and then by specific sites, projects, and persons. Individual subject files, arranged alphabetically, make up the second group of this series. Subjects include organizations and sites or structures. This part of the series includes numerous files from the National Park Service and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities. Also of note are three files of papers and dissertation chapters by James Glass, another prominent historian of the preservation movement in the United States.

Series 6: Photographs and Microfilm, 1919-1952 and undated (10 items)
Series VI includes eight photographs and two reels of microfilm. The photographs date between 1928 and 1952, although a few are undated. They depict: advisory boards active in the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg; a restored garden at Williamsburg; John D. Rockefeller; Historic American Building Survey advisory boards; delegates to the April 1947 organization meeting of the National Council for the Preservation of Historic Sites and Buildings in Washington D.C.
One of the two reels of microfilm consists of late nineteenth-century Levy family correspondence regarding ownership of Monticello. Hosmer obtained this microfilm from the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in May 1962. The other microfilm is of an article by William Sumner Appleton which had appeared in Art and Archaeology in the May-June 1919 issue.
All photographs have been transferred to the photograph collection, and the microfilm has been transferred to the microform collection.
There is currently no box inventory available for this series. Please refer to the series description above for a broad description of the materials.
Related Material
The Archives of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D. C., holds tapes and transcripts of eighty-three interviews that Hosmer conducted with professionals and laypersons who were involved in historic preservation projects and societies in the United States between approximately 1926 and 1950. An index to this collection is available at the Archives and Manuscripts Department in Hornbake Library at the University of Maryland.
The historic preservation researcher may also find related materials at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, whose oral history collections Hosmer used, and at the Cornell University Department of Archives and History, which contains a collection of oral history interview transcripts compiled by James Glass during the course of his dissertation research on aspects of the historic preservation movement. Principia College, Elsah, Illinois, holds a collection of Hosmer's correspondence relating to interviews conducted for use in Preservation Comes of Age.
There are copies of Hosmer's two published works: Presence of the Past (call number E159.H77) and Preservation Comes of Age (call number NA106.H67) among the holdings of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection at the University of Maryland Libraries. The Trust Library also holds an extensive collection of books, articles, and other printed material concerning all aspects of the field of historic preservation.
