Abstract
Joseph Irwin France (1873-1939) was a physician, state and U.S. senator, and a Maryland politician. His papers consist of scrapbooks, correspondence, pamphlets, speeches, and financial records. They relate to such subjects as Maryland and national politics; Republican party politics; suffrage; child welfare; trade; Russia; World War I; conscription; food control; farm relief; prohibition; labor strikes; disarmament; election campaigns; and Washington, D.C. society.

Historical Note
Joseph Irwin France (1873-1939) was born in Missouri and raised in Michigan and New York. Graduating from Hamilton College, he obtained a fellowship in anatomy and physiology at Cornell. He attended the University of Leipzig, held the chair in Natural Science at the Jacob Tome Institute and attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, graduating as an M.D. From 1905-09 France was State Senator from Cecil County. In 1917 he was elected U.S. Senator and served until 1922. Member of the Republican State Central Committee and active in politics until 1932, France retired to his farm near Port Deposit.

The papers of Joseph Irwin France consist of scrapbooks, correspondence, pamphlets, speeches, financial records and miscellaneous newspaper clippings. Subjects covered include: Maryland and national politics, Republican Party politics, suffrage, treaties, child welfare, trade, Russia, World War I, conscription, food control, farm relief, prohibition, labor, strikes, disarmament, campaigns and elections, and Washington society. The materials date from 1884 to 1935.
Custodial History and Acquisition Information
The papers of Joseph Irwin France were accessioned by the University of Maryland College Park Libraries in 1972. Additional material was donated by Dr. and Mrs. Merrill in 1982.

Two series have been created from the papers of Joseph Irwin France. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips over acid-free paper. All materials were placed in acid-free folders and acid-free boxes.

Detailed Description of the Collection
Series 1: Scrapbooks, 1884-1932 (34.75 linear feet)
Series I consists of scrapbooks belonging to various France family members. The scrapbooks are composed almost entirely of newspaper clippings on various economic, political, and social issues as well as poems, book reviews, and other miscellaneous subjects. Arrangement is chronological by date.
