Abstract:

Rose Marie Grentzer (1914-1985) was a music educator and graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1936 with three bachelor's degrees in public school music, music (violin), and music education. Grentzer taught music education courses at a number of institutions including Julliard, the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, University of Michigan, University of Colorado and the Catholic University of America. In 1955 she was hired by the University of Maryland to develop a Master's graduate program in music education. While there she organized and directed the Madrigal Singers, who went on many tours and performed at prestigious events in Washington DC. This collection contains catalogs regarding music education, musical instruments, and music technology; as well as correspondence, serials, pamphlets, papers, brochures, embossers, and recordings related to Grentzer's work in music education including the University of Maryland summer choral workshops, the University of Maryland Madrigals Singers, and the creation of MENC film guides.

Historical Note

Rose Marie Grentzer was born in 1914, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1936. She earned three bachelor's degrees in public school music, music (violin), and music education. Grentzer taught at Julliard's teacher training program during the academic years of 1946-1951. From 1948-1950, Grentzer was the chair of this department. Grentzer also taught at Julliard's Summer School from 1948-1949, and the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music from 1950 until 1955.

In 1955, Grentzer married Harold Spivacke. She kept her maiden name professionally. He died in 1977; they did not have any children. Also in 1955, Grentzer was hired by the University of Maryland to develop a Master's Graduate program in music education. In 1959, Grentzer became the director of the Madrigal's Singers, who went on many tours and performed at prestigious events in Washington DC. Grentzer retired in 1974.

Among her accomplishments are these (dates unknown): Supervisor of Music in the Braddock Public Schools in Pennsylvania, instructor at University of Michigan, and Visiting Lecturer at the University of Colorado, Catholic University of America, and the University of Michigan. Additionally, Grentzer lectured in South America, Canada, and Europe. She was also the Director of the Annual American Music Awards for Sigma Alpha Iota. Grentzer died November 11, 1985 of cancer.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Rose Marie Grentzer Papers spans the period from 1946 to 1974; the bulk of the materials are dated from 1963-1974. This collection consists of catalogs regarding music education, musical instruments, and music technology; as well as correspondence, serials, pamphlets, papers, brochures, embossers, and recordings related to Grentzer's work in music education including the University of Maryland summer choral workshops, the University of Maryland Madrigals Singers, and the creation of MENC film guides which makes up the bulk of the collection.

Custodial History and Acquisition Information

Rose Marie Grentzer donated her materials on four separate occasions in 1974.

This series includes materials from and drafts of two separate catalogs produced by MENC. One is of collegiate and graduate scholarship offerings, and the second is a MENC film guide publication.
