Records of Shuttle-UM
Abstract
Shuttle-UM, a transportation service provided free of charge to University of Maryland students and employees, began operation in 1976, with initial service to three commuter routes. At present, annual ridership exceeds one million persons who are served by a fleet of over thirty buses. The records of Shuttle-UM document the administration, operations, policies, and history of the service. They consist of annual reports, publications, employee handbooks and manuals, and other administrative materials. Also included are bus schedules, bus routes, dispatcher logs, bus stop descriptions, and papers written about the history of the organization.

Historical Note
Shuttle-UM began serving the University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff in 1976, with initial service to three commuter routes with four buses. Shuttle-UM developed from the Evening Security Shuttle Service begun in 1972 out of concern for student safety. In its first year Shuttle-UM service provided transportation to over 65,000 persons; today annual ridership exceeds 1,000,000, served by a fleet of over thirty buses.
Shuttle-UM is provided free of charge to over 50,000 University of Maryland students and employees, funded primarily through the Student Activity Fee. Its services include access to the Washington Metro System, a fixed-route evening security service on campus, door-to-door service for the mobility impaired, and charter services, as well as commuter routes to student-saturated living areas. The program is part of the Office of Commuter Affairs and Community Service and uses a student management model. Shuttle-UM is unique because all facets of the operation are handled by student employees, including driving, training of employees, and dispatching. Shuttle-UM owns its own maintenance facility, where its vehicles are serviced and repaired. The organization is a member of the American Public Transit Association and the Transit Association of Maryland.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The records of Shuttle-UM span the period 1976 to 1994 and document the administration, operations, policies, and history of the service. The collection contains annual reports and publications created by Shuttle-UM, as well as employee handbooks and manuals. Included in these records are papers written about the history of the organization and reports chronicling Shuttle-UM services; bus schedules, bus routes, dispatcher logs, and bus stop descriptions document the daily operations of Shuttle-UM. The records also include numerous administrative materials, such as personnel listings, inter-office correspondence, and correspondence received from the public. Photographs of Shuttle-UM employees and newspaper clippings are also among the materials in this record group.
Custodial History and Acquisition Information
The records of Shuttle-UM were transferred to the University of Maryland Libraries in July 1994 by former shuttle employee Heather Venters.

A preliminary box inventory of the Shuttle-UM Records was prepared in 1994. All materials were placed in acid-free folders and boxes, staples and paper clips were removed, and film negatives were transferred to the photograph collection. In addition, a poster was transferred to oversize storage. Processing of the records was completed in March 1998 and a finding aid was created.

Detailed Description of the Collection
Series 1: History of Shuttle-UM, 1972-1988 and undated (0.25 linear feet)
This series contains documents chronicling the history of Shuttle-UM. Three papers concentrate on the development and early history of the program; also included in this series is an overview of Shuttle-UM service to 1988, as well as a critique of the system prepared by the transit manager of the University of Iowa. A scrapbook of newspaper clippings and photographs compiled by Shuttle-UM staff also appears in this series. This series is arranged alphabetically by title.

This series documents the day-to-day operations of the Shuttle-UM. Found here are bus schedules, route maps, passenger tallies, and bus stop descriptions. Dispatcher transaction logs detailing the daily events of the operations are also included, as well as staff shift times and staff listings. A Shuttle-UM poster is filed in oversize storage. This series is arranged alphabetically by subject.
