The County seat is Annapolis. Howard County is located in the Baltimore metropolitan region. The County seat is in Ellicott City. Major towns include Columbia, Savage, Clarksville, Jessup, Elkridge.

The Agricultural Experiment Station was founded in 1888 in order to use the resources of science to improve practice and profitability of agriculture, to conduct investigations into agricultural problems, and to publish and disseminate widely the results of its research. The collection consists of the operating records of the Agricultural Experiment Station and includes project and academic files, contracts and agreements, documentation of professional association activities of the station's directors, memorabilia, and photographs. Papers of John Henry Alexander,

John H. Alexander (1812-1867) had a varied career as a lawyer, civil engineer, surveyor, geologist, and teacher at the universities of Pennsylvania and Maryland. As Chief Engineer of Maryland, he surveyed the Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad. He also conducted a coast survey for the federal government, and, as Maryland's first geologist, mapped coal deposits in the state. The collection consists of reports, pamphlets, essays, and correspondence. Important subjects documented in the collection include the Susquehanna Valley, surveys, railroads, Indian tribes, real estate, and family life.

This collection contains materials relating to the career of William L. Amoss, who was director of the Department of Farmers' Institutes at the Maryland Agricultural College from 1896 to 1910. Amoss's papers include daybooks, brochures, scrapbooks, reports and photographs, and cover such subjects as farmers' institutes, county fairs, farmers' markets, the Maryland State Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, local farm clubs, poultry, horticulture, and transportation. Born in Harford County, Amoss collected material related to Central Maryland, especially in Series II with the subjects Bel Air-Harford Turnpike 1908-09 and Farm clubs of Harford County.

Dr. Thomas Bray (1656-1730) was the Commissary of the Bishop of London for the Anglican Church in Maryland. His papers consist of minutes, petitions, proposals, legislation, correspondence, and catalogs. Subjects include conditions of life and the state of the Anglican Church in colonial Maryland, Quakers, libraries, and the clergy. Included are documents pertaining to the Annapolis Free School, and the clergy in Annapolis.

The Bureau of Business and Economic Research was founded in 1946 to conduct academic research into regional economic concerns. The administrative records of the Bureau include reports, computer printouts, book manuscripts, and publications. The Central Atlantic Environment Center was established in 1967 as the Potomac Basin Center. The Center collected, analyzed, and disseminated information on issues relating to natural resources. The Maryland wetlands are documented in the collection.

Kenneth Grace (1894-1974), born in Easton, MD, was a 1916 graduate of the Maryland Agricultural College. His field books and fishing diaries record environmental conditions and life on the Chesapeake Bay. Grace's papers also include yearly statistics, numbers of fish, numerous photographs of the Eastern Shoreand memorabilia relating to Grace's years as a fisherman on the Chesapeake Bay.

Robert Lamar Green was professor of agricultural engineering at the University of Maryland from 1958 to 1976, serving as head of the department until 1972. He was appointed coordinator of the Water Resources Center in 1965 and was acting director of the Agricultural Experiment Station from 1973 to 1975. The collection includes correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes and memoranda, and conference programs. Subjects include the Committee to Study Shore Erosion; the Maryland State Water Resources Commission; the Governor's Advisory Commission on Resources Development and Conservation; and the Water Resources Study Committee. Chesapeake Bay is covered in boxes 1 and 2.

Papers of Celia M. Holland,

Celia M. Holland (1911-1993), a Baltimore, Maryland native, was a local history writer and the unofficial historian of Howard County, Maryland. Her most important work was the monograph entitled Old Homes and Families of Howard County, Maryland. She produced numerous newspaper and magazine articles on Maryland history topics (primarily Ellicott City) and conducted extensive correspondence with many individuals sharing similar local history interests. Celia Holland's papers consist of correspondence and biographical information, writings and publicity, property documentation, and research materials concerning historic preservation. Topics covered include properties relating to Ellicott City; Howard County properties and topics; county subject files; and historic sites in Maryland. Over 3,000 color slides of historic buildings and locations throughout the state of Maryland, including more than 200 of Anne Arundel County are also available.

William Preston Lane (1892-1967) was a lawyer, newspaper publisher, Attorney General for Maryland, and governor of Maryland from 1947 to 1951. Lane's papers concentrate on his gubernatorial campaigns of 1946 and 1950, consisting of correspondence, speeches, and constituent mail from Maryland counties. During his term, the original Chesapeake Bay Bridge was begun and completed. The papers include documentation of the bridge's construction from 1948-1949.

Romeo Mansueti (1923-1963) was a biologist and research professor at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and at the University of Maryland. His papers document his work on various committees and as editor of various scientific journals, as well as his research on fish migration, bionomics of fresh water and estuarine fish populations, and the taxonomy and ecology of fish eggs. Documentation of the Patuxent River and the Susquehanna River (Box 21) are contained in Mansueti's papers.

The collection covers Central Maryland in folders on the Chesapeake Environmental Protection Association and Citizens Bay Workshop.

Milton A. Reckord (1879-1975) was a high-ranking officer in the U.S. Army and the Maryland National Guard born in Harford County. Reckord was active in the National Guard Association, the National Rifle Association, and numerous civic organizations. Reckord's papers include personal and military documents tracing his professional career and civilian activities as well as extensive war-time correspondence with his mother, Lydia Reckord. The correspondence and personal documents from 1871-1975 capture the history of Harford County.

The Sellman Family Papers span the years 1828 through 1908 with the bulk of the material dating between 1850 and 1865 and document the lives of a landowning family in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Two of the letters were from Magraw and Virdin of Havre de Grace, Maryland, a company Thompson used in his merchandising business.
