Physical Library Navigation: The Architecture Library is one of eight libraries in the University of Maryland (College Park) Libraries system. The College Park library system is part of a larger state-wide consortium (USMAI) from which you may borrow material. Learning to navigate the library requires two sets of skills:
Virtual Library Navigation: the most basic architectural research skills are done virtually. You must know how to search the catalog for a book, how to renew books online, how to request items from other USMAI libraries, and beyond.
Research Skills: the most basic architectural research skills are done through the computer. Once you know how to search the catalog for a book, you need to know what types of books to look for, and how to search for a magazine article. To find out information on a specific architect or building, look for directories, encyclopedias, or books in the catalog: To find magazine articles on a specific architect or building, look in the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals.
