The University of Maryland Libraries have many resources that will help with research for UNIV 100 projects. If you need additional information, please contact Patti Cossard or speak with a Reference Librarian at either the Art or Architecture Library's Reference Desk.

Because of licensing agreements, access to bibliographic databases and electronic journals is restricted to UM faculty, staff, and students. These may be accessed from off campus; consult Remote access for further information. For a complete list of electronic resources available to University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students, as well as information about the full range of library materials and services, consult the UM Libraries' home page.

Physical Library Navigation: The Architecture Library is one of eight libraries in the University of Maryland (College Park) Libraries system. The College Park library system is part of a larger state-wide consortium (USMAI) from which you may borrow material.

Learning to navigate the library requires two sets of skills:

  • physical navigation
  • virtual navigation
This section will discuss the physical plant. Click here to get a map of the Architecture library.
  • Go to the Reference Desk for help
  • Go to the Circulation Desk to request a reserve book (once you get the call number form the catalog)
  • Go to the Circulation Desk to check out or return a book
  • Go next to the Circulation Desk to photocopy items and find staplers, tape, whole punch, etc.
  • Go upstairs to find regular size (stack) books
  • Go to main floor to find large (folio) books
  • Go to main floor to find bound periodicals (magazines)
  • Public Computers for online research are on either floor

Virtual Library Navigation: the most basic architectural research skills are done virtually. You must know how to search the catalog for a book, how to renew books online, how to request items from other USMAI libraries, and beyond.

Research Skills: the most basic architectural research skills are done through the computer. Once you know how to search the catalog for a book, you need to know what types of books to look for, and how to search for a magazine article.

To find out information on a specific architect or building, look for directories, encyclopedias, or books in the catalog:

To find magazine articles on a specific architect or building, look in the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals.
