ARTH 488B: The Visual Culture of War from 1700 to 1945

PURPOSE OF THIS LIBRARY COURSE PAGE
The University of Maryland Libraries provide access to many sources of information useful for the study of the visual culture of war. This page offers an overview of research skills, library services and relevant resources including the Libraries' online Catalog and subject-specific databases available through Research Port. For your convenience this page will remain accessible through the end of the semester. OUTLINE
Physical Library Navigation: The University of Maryland Libraries comprise eight branches on the College Park campus.
Most of the materials relating to art and architecture are located in the Art and Architecture Libraries.
The College Park libraries are part of a larger state-wide consortium (USMAI) from which you may
borrow materials. Features you'll find in each of the libraries include:
- Reference/Information Desk -- ask library staff for help
- Reference Collection -- non-circulating books for ready research
- Circulation/Reserve Desk -- borrow a book on reserve for your class
- Circulation Desk -- borrow or return a book
- Stacks -- regular size books (Art Library: mezzanine level)
- Folio -- larger size books (Art Library: main level)
- Periodicals -- journals, magazines and newspapers
- Public Computers -- access to the Libraries' Catalog, Research Port and more
- Pay-for-Print and Photocopy facilities

Current Periodicals (Journals) in the Art Library: These are located in the reading room on the mezzanine level, shelved alphabetically by title for browsing. Note that older issues are cataloged and shelved by call number; search for the journal title in the online Catalog to find the call number. To search the contents of art journals, use the major art databases listed below.

Research Skills: Basic research skills include searching the Catalog for books and journal titles; reading Catalog records to locate books and journals in the library; identifying and searching databases in Research Port for journal articles; using Find It links to locate the texts of articles online and/or in print.
- Using the Catalog to find Books, Exhibition Catalogs, Journals, Videos and more
Visit the UM Libraries home page and click on Catalog. Use the default view for a Basic Search of the College Park Catalog; use the drop-down menu to select a search type: author, title, call number, etc).
Or, customize your search by selecting Advanced Search, Choose Campus, and/or Journals (to search for newspaper and magazine titles). Advanced searching offers drop-down menus to select multiple search types (Boolean searching using "and"/"or") and to limit your search by format, language, location, collection, and/or year(s).
- Using Research Port to find Databases, Journal Articles, and Electronic Journals
Visit the UM Libraries home page and click on Research Port. Begin your search for journal articles by selecting a database subject category such as Art and Art History or General/Multidisciplinary, then select a particular database by title; see databases linked below.
Be sure to click the Find It link in the item record for a list of options for locating the the text of the article in print and/or online!
Search Electronic Journals by journal title, and then by topic within the journal.
- Locating Known Citations, Journal Articles
When you already have a citation for a journal article, a quick way to locate the text is to use the Full Text Finder (from the homepage, using the left side search box, type in: full text finder). Be sure to search under the title of the JOURNAL/MAGAZINE NOT the title of the ARTICLE. Click on Find Article

An index to articles from 1974-present on all aspects of modern and contemporary art from the late 19th century to the present.
- ARTstor
A repository of digital images from many periods and cultures representing architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, design, and other forms of visual culture.

Indexes theses and dissertations from 1861 to the present; full text is available from 1997 to the present.
- Eighteenth Century Collections Online
A searchable full-text database of titles printed in the United Kingdom and the Americas during the 18th century.
- Historical Abstracts
An index to articles, books and dissertations from 1954-present on history topics of the period 1450 to the present -- excluding the US and Canada. Some full-text articles are available.

Access to full-text journals and books in the humanities.
- JSTOR
Electronic archive of core journals in the humanities and other disciplines. Includes complete runs of all journals indexed and full text of articles up to the most current five years.
- New York Times Historical (1851-2005)
Online access to complete contents including searchable full text and full page reproductions.
- Oxford Art Online (Formerly Grove Art)
Includes the
full text of the 34-volume Dictionary of Art with scholarly articles and links to images in museum collections worldwide.
- Periodicals Index Online
An index to full runs of arts/humanities and social science journals published inernationally since the 19th-century; includes some full text access.
- Washington Post Historical
Online access to complete contents from 1877-1988 including searchable full text and full page reproductions. Note: use LexisNexis Academic for access to content from 1988 - present.
- WorldCat
A catalog of books, serial publications, media, visual materials, musical scores, and archival materials in libraries worldwide. Items not owned by the UM Libraries may be requested through Interlibrary Loan.
