You will be conducting the bulk of your research at the Art Library. Consulting the Art Library Floor Plan will help you navigate the library and easily find what you need.
Remember: stacks (regular sized books) are located on the Library's mezzanine level and folios (large-sized books) can be found on the Library's main level.

Virtual Library Navigation: Begin your research at the
UM Libraries home page (http://www.lib.umd.edu).
Getting oriented: How Do I . . . ? offers quick access to library resources, services and information by type.
Research Skills: Basic research skills include searching the Catalog for books and journal titles; reading Catalog records to locate books and journals in the library; identifying and searching databases in Research Port for journal articles; using Find It links to locate the texts of articles online and/or in print.
Using the Catalog to find Books, Exhibition Catalogs, Journals, Videos and more
Visit the UM Libraries home page and click on Catalog. The Catalog allows you to search by keyword, author, title, subject and call number.
Tips for keyword searching:
- To search an exact phrase...use Quotes
"renaissance painting"
- To search a particular artist, search under subject and use the last name first, followed by the first name (if known) or the first letter of the first name
Perugino or Buonarotti, Michelangelo
- To narrow your search...use AND
renaissance and sculpture
- To exclude certain words from your search...use NOT
(renaissance and art) not literature
- To use various terms for similar concepts...use OR
(italian or roman) and renaissance
- To search the root of a word...use truncation. Truncation is shortening a word to its root with a special symbol (e.g., *, $, ?) to return all the variants of that word in your search results.
Art* will retrieve art,
arts, and
artist.
