OUTLINE

Navigating the Library

Physical Library Navigation: The University of Maryland Libraries comprise eight branches on the College Park campus. Most art- and architecture-related materials are located in the Art and Architecture Libraries. However, because of the interdisciplinary nature of this subject, some items are located at McKeldin Library. Japanese-language materials are located in the East Asia Collection in McKeldin Library. The College Park libraries are part of a larger state-wide consortium (USMAI) from which you may borrow materials. Features you'll find in each of the libraries include:

  • Reference/Information Desk -- ask library staff for help
  • Reference Collection -- non-circulating books for ready research
  • Circulation/Reserve Desk -- borrow a book on reserve for your class
  • Circulation Desk -- borrow or return a book
  • Stacks -- regular size books (Art Library: mezzanine level)
  • Folio -- larger size books (Art Library: main level)
  • Periodicals -- journals and magazines
  • Public Computers -- access to the Libraries' Catalog, Research Port and more
  • Pay-for-Print and Photocopy facilities

Research Skills: Basic research skills include searching the online Catalog for books and journal titles; reading Catalog records to locate books and journals in the library; identifying and searching databases in Research Port for journal articles; using Find It links to locate the texts of articles online and/or in print.

  • Using the Catalog to find Books, Exhibition Catalogs, Journals, Videos and more Visit the UM Libraries home page and click on Catalog. Use the default view for a Basic Search of the College Park Catalog; use the drop-down menu to select a search type: author, title, call number, etc.
Or, customize your search by selecting Advanced Search, Choose Campus, and/or Journals (to search for newspaper and magazine titles). Advanced searching offers drop-down menus to select multiple search types (Boolean searching using "and"/"or") and to limit your search by format, language, location, collection, and/or year(s).

  • Using Research Port to find Databases, Journal Articles, and Electronic Journals Visit the UM Libraries home page and click on Research Port. Begin your search for journal articles by selecting a database subject category such as Art and Art History or General/Multidisciplinary, then select a particular database by title; see databases linked below.
Be sure to click the Find It link on the item record for a list of options for locating the the text of the article in print and/or online!
Search electronic journals by journal title, such as Asian Arts, and then by topic within the journal.

  • Locating Known Citations, Journal Articles
When you already have a citation for a journal article, a quick way to locate the text is to use the Full Text Finder (from the homepage, using the left side search box, type in: full text finder). Be sure to search under the title of the JOURNAL/MAGAZINE NOT the title of the ARTICLE. Click on Find Article
