Hugo Keesing to Speak at MSPAL

November 1st, 2010 by Steve

Vietnam coverAs part of the University Libraries’ Speaking of Books series, Dr. Hugo Keesing, former Professor in the American Studies department, will be discussing Next Stop is Vietnam: The War on Record 1961-2008, a 13-CD box set he has curated for Bear Family Records. The event will take place Tuesday, November 23, 4:30-6:00pm in the MSPAL Piano room. It’s free. Refreshments will be served.

Dr. Keesing is the collector and donor of several collections that reside in MSPAL’s Special Collections in Performing Arts, all of which focus on popular music and culture. The box set in many ways represents a fusion of Dr. Keesing’s interests in American history and in popular music. We are looking forward to hearing him speak about this project from his unique perspective.

Speaking of Books… Conversations with Campus Authors presents: Next Stop Is Vietnam: The War on Record, 1961-2008 (Bear Family Records, 2010)
A Conversation with Dr. Hugo Keesing, former Professor, American Studies.
Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 4:30-6:00pm
Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, Piano Room

In honor of Veteran’s Day, “Speaking of Books…” will temporarily become “Speaking of Music…” for the month of November. Dr. Hugo Keesing will discuss the 13-CD box set he curated for Germany’s Bear Family Records, Next Stop Is Vietnam: The War on Record, 1961-2008. Over 330 music and spoken word tracks take the listener through a guided tour of this epochal period of modern history. From America’s first, naive impressions of a country called Vietnam through the spirited musical debate over the morality of the war to the healing meditations on the conflict’s lengthy aftermath, this set captures it all and more. Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Merle Haggard, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs, Johnny Cash, Yoko Ono, John Lennon, The Doors, Country Joe McDonald and dozens of other artists including many Vietnam veterans are the tour guides through this enlightening and entertaining journey. Dr. Keesing, a former professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland, contributed notes on the songs and the artists who recorded them for the 304-page book that accompanies the set.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Please note the change of location for this talk–it will take place in the Piano Room of the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library. More information is available at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/MCK/booktalks.html.
