Diplomacy Through Song: The Madrigal Singers at Home and Abroad
Part II of Fostering Diplomacy through Music, an Exhibition Series
Lowens Reading Room, Special Collections in Performing Arts
This series explores the diplomatic potential of music through the archives of four globally-minded organizations. The second installment of the series, now on display, features the international appearances of the University of Maryland Madrigal Singers. Active from 1958-1974, the Singers performed for State Dinners at the White House and participated in a four-month tour of the Near East for the State Department’s Cultural Exchange Program.
The first installment of the exhibition series opened in January and featured the twenty-year partnership, from 1974-1994, between the American Bandmasters Association and the Japanese Band Directors Association.
The final installment will launch next Spring and will focus on the global educational efforts of two leading organizations, the Music Educators National Conference and the International Society for Music Education.
Items in the archives of these organizations demonstrate that musicians and music educators have long been involved with bridging differences, forging friendships, and engaging in meaningful cultural exchange. This series is curated by Amanda May, SCPA manager, and Cassandra Berman, SCPA GA.
