Introduction to XML and the Text Encoding Initiative27-28 September 20059:30 AM–5:00 PMMcKeldin LibraryFacilitated by Susan Schreibman and Gretchen Gueguen. This workshop is currently oversubscribed. If you are interested in being added to the waitlist should any seats become available, please e-mail seancdaug@gmail.com. This hands-on workshop, which has been certified by the TEI Council, provides a basic introduction to the theory and practice of encoding electronic texts for the humanities using Extensible Markup Language (XML) and its subset for the humanities, the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Workshop participants will not be expected to have any prior knowledge of XML or TEI; however, a familiarity with basic HTML would be useful. It is designed for the novice or for those with limited experience of text encoding, and is aimed at those interested in embarking upon, or taking part in, a project involving electronic texts, as well as those who would just like to learn the basics of the philosophy, theory, and practicalities of encoding in XML using the TEI Guidelines. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained an understanding of markup languages and the TEI Guidelines, and experience encoding a TEI header, as well as a text in TEILite.
