Desider L. Vikor, Interim Dean of Libraries
University of Maryland, College Park

Dr. Desider L. Vikor has been appointed Interim Dean of the University Libraries, effective July 1, 2008.

Dr. Vikor has held a variety of librarian positions during the twenty-five years that he has been affiliated with the University of Maryland. He has been a member of the senior administrative staff of the Libraries since 1988 and most recently was Director of Collection Management and Special Collections. In this capacity, he was responsible for the management of the special collections function of the Libraries, including the following collections and administrative units: East Asia Collection and Gordon W. Prange Collection, Archives & Manuscripts, Marylandia and Rare Books, the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library Collection, the Library of American Broadcasting, and Nonprint Media Services. He also had direct oversight of the collection management and development activities of the campus libraries and provided administrative oversight of the library at the Universities at Shady Grove.

As an active campus citizen, Dr. Vikor has served on a variety of campus committees, including many years of service on the University Senate Programs, Courses, and Curricula Committee. Beyond campus, he is a member of a number of scholarly and professional associations and presently serves on professional committees, including elected office with the Library Administration and Management Association, a division of the American Library Association. He has authored professional publications and delivered presentations to professional as well as civic organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Vikor earned his Ph.D. (1979) and M.A. (1973) degrees in history from Harvard University. He holds a Master of Library Science degree (1980) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. (1972, summa cum laude) in history and French studies from Western Carolina University.
