Abstract: This thesis addresses ways to provide a visual experience through a sequence of spatial experiences placed within the landscape; in particular to strengthen the relationship between man and his surroundings. It focuses on the importance of spaces between the architecture, as opposed to just the buildings themselves. In studying the connections between spatial and visual forces, this thesis explores how the buildings interact to contain the landscape. In Oregon along the Columbia River, small wineries have thrived among the regions agriculture. This thesis proposes the design of a winery for Troutdale, a small town outside Portland. Troutdale provides opportunities to strengthen the connection between community and the larger environment. In addition, a farmers market will be the interface between the town and the surrounding landscape. Looking critically at where program elements are situated on the site to maximize the variety of uses and their direct connection to the landscape.
