Landscan Population Dataset is Here!
We have just acquired (thanks to faculty and Gemstone team requests) the Landscan Global Population Dataset. This dataset shows "ambient" population for the whole world - this means it shows the geographical distribution of population at one-kilometer resolution over an average 24-hour period. This makes richer analysis possible since you can see how the population is scattered during the day.
There are three ways to access the Landscan dataset.
- If you just want to explore it, use the web interface.
- If you are a GIS software user, you can access it via WCS (http://wms.cartographic.com/gws/services/LandScan2010/LS_2010/MapServer/WCSServer) or WMS (http://wms.cartographi.com/gws/services/LandScan2010/LS_2010/MapServer/WMSServer)
- If you need your own copy of the data for educational use, come to McKeldin Library and use the dataset on DVD.
